ポジティブな違和感を生んだ、「たちうり珈琲虎へび屋」の家具
科学者として研究・開発を行ってきた焙煎士が「Coffee and Science」をテーマに独自手法で織りなす虎へび珈琲。
世界中から厳選した生豆にオーガニックサイエンスを施し焙煎することで、唯一無二の珈琲を提供しています。
また、コーヒーをベースとして様々なかたちで衣食住にアプローチを試みています。
そのコンセプトを体験できる空間として、渋谷PARCO1Fの期間限定POP UP STORE「たちうり珈琲虎へび屋」のインテリアを我々Manekineko & Partnersがデザインをしました。
仮設空間には常設の空間とは違った機能的・経済的合理性が求められます。
多様なマテリアルや建築的な要素を組み合わせることでそれらの条件を解決すると同時に、虎へび珈琲の世界観にも繋がる偶発的な美しさを表現しました。
例えれば異質な要素の中にも美を見出す、ポスト・モダンの建築様式です。
店内のしつらえには、珈琲染めの紐、和紙、無垢材、石、といった自然素材と、アクリルやスチールといった人工的なマテリアルが共存しています。

その中でも特に着目したのは通常は建材として使用されるFRPグレーチングという素材です。（FRP とはFiberglass Reinforced Plastic：ガラス繊維で強化されたプラスチックのことであり、通常は強化プラスチックと呼ばれている複合材料です。）
グレーチング自体は道路の側溝や建物の外階段、手すり等で多く使われているため普段から目にしているかもしれません。
そのような特別に意識することがないようなような素材をカウンターの天板や、テラスのスツールやベンチの座面といったユーザーが目にし、直接手に触れる部分に採用しました。
ガラスのように脆く割れやすそうな表情をしていても平米350kgにも耐えうる堅牢さ。
硬いのか、はたまた柔らかいのか。
ポジティブな違和感を生むその質感の正体を確かめるべく、期間中足を止めて実際に触っていく人が跡を絶ちませんでした。
無機質な格子とナチュラルな無垢材による素材の邂逅が、今回の「COFFEE CEREMONY」のプロダクトへと繋がりました。
COFFEE CEREMONYについて
コーヒー発祥の地と言われているエチオピアでは、冠婚葬祭の際や大切なお客様をもてなす時に行う 「コーヒーセレモニー（カリオモン）」という伝統的な習慣があります。
日本の茶道と同様、手順や作法がありコーヒーを飲むという行為に精神的な要素や教養などが含まれる文化的な習慣です。
日本における茶道と少し違う部分としては、広くエチオピアの一般の人々の日常生活に溶け込んだ儀式であることでしょうか。
エチオピアではコミュケーションに欠かせないもので、家族や友達だけの時も、簡易化した形式ではあるものの、「コーヒーセレモニー」を行いその時間を愉しむそうです。
その際に使用されるポットやカップなどの茶器は代々受け継がれながら大切に使われるとのこと。
COFFEE CEREMONYというタイトルとプロダクトデザインの背景には、コーヒーを通した他者への感謝ともてなしの精神、道具への愛情、といったエチオピアの文化的背景、コーヒーの歴史や文化に対しての敬意と共感が込められています。
プロダクトデザインについて
POP UP STOREである「たちうり珈琲虎へび屋」 のベンチとスツールは、建材の下地材と、FRPグレーチングの座面という本来家具で使用しない素材が、仮設という条件のもとそれぞれがビスで固定されただけのシンプルな構造になっています。
そのポストモダンなデザインエッセンスを残しながら、仮設ではなく通常使用する家具としてリデザインしました。
無垢材でできた脚部では、釘やビスを使用しない「井桁接ぎ」という日本の木造建築の伝統的な木組みの方法を採用しています。
また、FRPグレーチングの座面や、ガラスの天板それぞれを固定設置する方法も、支柱の仕口と素材に合わせてそれぞれ特別なパーツをデザインしました。
パーツ製造にはデジタルファブリケーション技術を採用し、3Dデータを元にマシンで切削加工をしています。
次世代への伝統技術の技術継承とデジタルアーカイブ化も目的の一つです。繊細に加工されたそれぞれのパーツと、それらが木組みされた後の美しさもデザインの重要な要素の一つとなっていることから、敢えて接合部が可視化できるデザインとなっています。

Torahebi Coffee is a unique coffee brewed by a roaster who has conducted research and development as a scientist, using his own unique method under the theme of "Coffee and Science".
They carefully select green coffee beans from all over the world and roast them with organic science to offer a unique coffee.
In addition, they try to approach food, clothing, and shelter in various ways based on coffee.
Manekineko & Partners designed the interior of the limited-time POP UP STORE "Tachiuri Coffee Torahebiya" as a space to experience this concept.
Temporary spaces require different functional and economic rationality than permanent spaces.
By combining a variety of materials and architectural elements, we were able to solve these requirements while at the same time expressing a contingent beauty that is connected to the world view of Torahebi Coffee.
It is a post-modern architectural style that finds beauty in heterogeneous elements.
The interior of the store is decorated with natural materials such as coffee-dyed string, Japanese paper, solid wood, and stone, as well as artificial materials such as acrylic and steel.
Among these materials, we focused on FRP grating, which is usually used as a construction material.
(FRP is Fiberglass Reinforced Plastic, a composite material usually referred to as reinforced plastic.)
Gratings themselves are often used in road gutters, building exterior stairs, railings, etc., so you may see them on a regular basis.
We used this kind of material, which you may not be aware of in particular, for counter tops, terrace stools and bench seats, and other parts that users can see and directly touch.
The material may look brittle and easily broken like glass, but it is robust enough to withstand 350 kg per square meter.
Is it hard or soft?
There was no end to the number of people who stopped by and actually touched the product during the exhibition to see the true nature of its texture, which creates a positive sense of discomfort.
The encounter between the inorganic lattice and natural solid wood led to the "COFFEE CEREMONY" this time.
About COFFEE CEREMONY
In Ethiopia, which is said to be the birthplace of coffee, there is a traditional custom called "coffee ceremony (cariomon)," which is held on ceremonial occasions such as weddings, funerals, and when entertaining important guests. Similar to the tea ceremony in Japan, there are procedures and manners to follow, and the act of drinking coffee is a cultural custom that includes spiritual and educational elements.
What makes it slightly different from the Japanese tea ceremony is that it is a ritual that is widely integrated into the daily lives of ordinary Ethiopians.
In Ethiopia, it is an essential part of communication, and even when it is just family and friends, a "coffee ceremony" is held, albeit in a simplified form, to enjoy the time together.
The pots, cups, and other tea utensils used in the ceremony are passed down from generation to generation and used with great care.
The title "COFFEE CEREMONY" and the background of the product design reflect the spirit of hospitality and appreciation for others through coffee, the love for tools, and the respect and empathy for the Ethiopian cultural background, coffee history, and culture.
About the product design
The bench and stool of the POP UP STORE "Tachiuri Coffee Torahebiya" are made of materials not normally used for furniture, such as the base material of building materials and the seat of FRP grating, and are simply fixed to each other with screws under the condition of temporary installation.
While retaining the essence of the post-modern design, we redesigned it as a piece of furniture for regular use, not as a temporary installation.
For the legs made of solid wood, we adopted a traditional Japanese wooden construction method called "igeta tsugi joinery ," which does not use nails or screws.
Special parts were also designed for the FRP grating seat and the glass tops, which are fixed and installed according to the workmanship and materials of the support columns.
Digital fabrication technology is used to manufacture the parts, which are cut by machine based on 3D data.
One of the objectives of the project is to pass on traditional techniques to the next generation and to create a digital archive.
The design of the joints can be visualized because the beauty of each delicately processed part after they are assembled into wood is also an important element of the design.
