ensconce
元々「小さい砦を築く」という意味らしい。砦を作ってその場所に落ち着くイメージか。settle in 場所と近い意味。「え~ん(この場所)すこーん!」と覚えよう(覚えにくい)。

vex
最初「獣医」かと勘違いしたけど,それは vet や。フランス語由来。フランス語に vexer (気を悪くさせる) という動詞がありますね。
vex は annoy より強意的らしい。類義語は annoy, worry, distress, irritate, bother, puzzle, irk など。irk と言えば, it irks 人 to do (~することが人をいらいらさせる)が重要。
