はじめに
みなさんは美術の知識はありますか? ...なんて聞かれても、自信をもって答えられない人! はい私です! 私は中学校の授業以来、工学の道をどっぷりつかっていたので特に体系的に習ったこともなく、たまに美術館に行ってはほぇーと鑑賞する程度のレベルです。芸術は前知識なしでも楽しめたらいいや!と思っているのですが、「怖い絵」は違います。一見怖くも何もない絵画が、その背景を知ることによってゾッとする一枚に変わります。

感想
一見すると美しい絵画の背景を知ってからもう一度見返してみると確かに怖い…そんな体験を何度も味わえる本書。本書のいいところは、絵画の知識がさっぱりな私でも面白いと思わせてくれるとっつきやすさのある文章たちです。

例えばこのクノップフの「見捨てられた街」。一見幻想的な風景で、建物が今にも波にさらわれていく…という絵に見えます。しかし、建物はあらゆる開口が固く閉じられており、通りには人影は見当たりません。なぜこの絵が怖いのか?この絵は作者のクノップフが幼い頃住んだブリージュという町並です。クノップフはこの町そのものが主人公のような小説「死都ブリージュ」(ジョルジュ・ローデンバック作)を読み、憑かれたように3年近くにわたってブリージュの絵ばかり描き続けたそうです。この小説と自身の屈折した思いを重ね合わせ、昔の記憶などを手掛かりに描き続ける作者…改めて見返すとどこか不穏に見えてきます。

「怖い絵」の中で一番私が好きなのはアルテミジア・ジェンティレスキの「ホロフェルネスの首を斬るユーディト」です。凄惨極まりないだけの絵画と思いきや、作者のバックグラウンドを知ると彼女たちがいかに勇猛に見えてくるか…

中野京子さんが監修には携わっていないそうですが、テイストの似ているあやしい絵展も東京の開催時に行きたかった…緊急事態宣言で行けなかった…
My thought in English
Do you have the plenty of art knowledge? I am the one who cannot answer that question with much confident. Since the art class in my junior high school, I have not had the opportunity of learning art history systematically because I was studying the technology field mainly. So sometimes I went to museum and just enjoyed casually how beautiful they are. I thought enjoying the arts does not have to need some special knowledge. However, this book tells me totally different way of how enjoy the arts. Plain beautiful picture turns out a horrifying scene at once.
Just one looking it was just so beautiful and harmless but knowing the background of it makes it so shudder…that is the experience this book gives us richly. One of best parts of this book is approachable and friendly, even me who do not have that much art knowledge can enjoy.

For example, this Fernand Khnopff’s Verlorene-stad. First impression of this is misty and translunary landscape its building is now carried off by the sea. All the windows and doors are shut tight, there is no passenger on the street.
Why is this picture scare? This landscape is Bruges the town of young Khnopff had lived. Grown Khnopff had read the noble “Bruges la Morte” that is about this town by Georges Rodenbach and had obsessed with painting the town for three years. Overlaying the novel and warped desire and keeping the same town without actual seeing the town but just old memory and letters. With information, suddenly the picture seems sinister.

One of my favorite art is Artemisia Gentileschi’s Judit decapitando a Holofernes. It looks like just ghastly painting. But knowing the background of painter made me how bold they are who in the picture…
This book is the eye opener of new enjoying way of art.

This is the art exhibition held in 2017 celebrating the 10th of publishing this book. If I can go back to the past, I would definitely go to there.
This is not this author involved but seems same taste, I wanted to go but due to the covid-19 state of emergency in Tokyo.
