どっちだろ？その"Pretty"可愛くないかも

オンラインで英語のレッスンをしていると
「それどういう意味で使ってる？」と聞き返すことがあります。
I quite often ask my clients "What do you men by that word?" when I have English lesson online.

その中でも多いのが、今回取り上げる"Pretty"
One of the most common one is todays' topic "Pretty".

"How are you? "って聞かれたとき、
"Pretty good."って答えたことありますか？
Have you answered "Pretty good." to the question "How are you? "

これ全くもってOKなんですが、思っている意味合いと違うことになっている場合があるので注意が必要です。
It's absolutely ok, but please check if it's same as what you mean.

Very, so, really などと同じ強調語と思ってらっしゃる方も多いのですが、
実際にはその逆で、言葉を曖昧にする働きがあります。
「結構・まあまあ・思ってたより」といった感じでしょうか。
This word is confused with emphasise words like very, so and really.
In fact, it obscures words instead of emphasising.

なので、上記の場合だと、
めっちゃ良いよ　ではなく
まぁまぁ良いよ　になるのです。
Then in this case,
it doesn't mean "I'm very good",
but "I'm not bad" or something similar.

この例でいくと、他にも
In other case with this,

A: I changed my hair colour yesterday.
B: Right! You look pretty good.
A: 昨日、髪色変えたんだ。
B: 本当だ！まぁまぁ似合ってるよ。

…なんて上から目線😱
…How arrogant it is!😱

基本、人を褒めるときには使わないと覚えておくと良いと思います☺️
Basically, it's not used to praise somebody☺️

では、どんなときにPrettyを使うのか見てみましょう！

そこまで…なとき
Not perfect

例えば、会社で同僚に誰かのことを聞かれた場合
For example, your colleague asks you about someone

同僚：ねぇ、山下部長って知ってる？
あなた：(詳しくはないけど)知ってるよ。
Colleague: Hey, do you know about Mr. Yamashita?
You: I know him pretty well.

詳しくはわからないけど、名前と顔と部署はわかるぐらいの場合ですね。
In this situation, you don't know him well but the face, name and the department.

和らげて言う
Make the word mild

例えば、試験の出来を聞かれて、
For example, your friend asks you about the exam

友人：試験どうだった？
あなた：まぁまぁできたと思う。
Friend: How was the exam?
You: I think I did it pretty well.

"I did it well" だと「めっちゃできた！へっへっへ」といった感じですが、「そこまでじゃないんだけど、でも良くできた」のレベルを表現したい際に使えます。
"I did it well" sounds "I was great! Hee-hehe." You can put pretty if you want to tell "Not perfect, but very good."

ちょっと皮肉を込めて

例えば、映画について話すとき
For example, talk bout a movie

友人：あの映画見たことある？
あなた：あるけど、まぁまぁ長かったで！
Friend: Have you seen the movie?
You: Yes, but it was pretty long.

ここでのPrettyは「かなり長かった」にもとれますよね？
This pretty can be changed to very, can't it?

これがPretty=強調語の認識になっているのかなと思います。
I think this is the reason why it confuses with emphasise words.

Cute：動物や子ども等の見た目や仕草が可愛らしいという意味で使います。
It's used to express cuteness of animals or children.

例）Our baby is super cute.：僕らの赤ちゃんはめっちゃかわいい👶💕

目がハート😍になる可愛さがcuteといったところでしょうか？
Cute is a feeling that you get love hearts in the eyes 😍, in my opinion.

Pretty：オトナの女性や、見た目が整っているといった場合に使います。
エレガントさや美しさを伴っていると考えて良いでしょう。
It expressed lady or good looking with elegance or beauty.

例）The lady is very pretty.：その女性はとても綺麗だ💃✨

これでもう可愛くないPrettyは卒業ですね！👏
