焚火の効用を改めて感じた。 I felt the utility of the bonfire again.

一昨日、初詣で訪れた西宮戎神社の拝殿の前の広場では焚火を参拝者が囲んでいた。

The day before yesterday, worshipers surrounded the bonfire in the plaza in front of the worship hall of Nishinomiya Shrine, which I visited for the first time of this year.

日頃、焚火を見ることもすることもないが、このように焚火にあたる機会があれば必ずといっていいほど子供の頃を思い出す。
60年前の田舎の暮らしの中で、お風呂やかまどは薪で焚くことが多かった頃である。当時は、お風呂が五右衛門風呂で、筆者が好んで火の番をしていた。薪をくべる窓口の前で時を忘れるくらい長く座り込んでいた記憶がある。冬場はもちろん温かいということもあったが、なぜか心地よかったことが記憶に深く残っている。

I don't usually see or do a bonfire, but when I have a chance to hit a bonfire like this, I almost always remember my childhood.
In the country life 60 years ago, baths and kamado were often fired with firewood. At that time, the bath was Goemon bath, and I liked to keep the fire. I remember sitting in front of the firewood window for a long time to forget the time. Of course it was warm in winter, but I remember feeling comfortable for some reason.

参拝の前に足が向いたのが焚火である。焚火にあたるというよりかは、焚火のゆらぎにそそられ近づいてしばし佇んでいた。
そのゆらぎは「1／fゆらぎ」といわれるもので、われわれ人間の本来持っているリズムと同じものがあるといわれている。それは科学的に解明され、本能的な快感や快適さを享受できるようだ。

It was a bonfire that I turned to before worshiping. Rather than hitting a bonfire, I was agitated by the fluctuations of the bonfire and stood there for a while.
The fluctuation is called "1 / f fluctuation", and it is said that there is the same rhythm that we humans originally have. It has been scientifically elucidated and seems to enjoy instinctive pleasure and comfort.

通常は、神社仏閣等で新年を迎えるにあたり門前を明るくするためにお焚き上げをし、また、一年間の厄を払い清めるための焚火ということである。
昔は三日三晩、燃やし続けたようだが、現在は消防法などで参拝時間内で燃やし続けている。

Usually, when the New Year is celebrated at shrines and temples, it is a bonfire to brighten the front of the gate and to eliminate the troubles of the year. In the past, it seems that it continued to burn for three days and three nights, but now it continues to burn within the worship time due to the Fire Service Act.

不滅の法灯ではないが、一年間の安全で健やかに暮らせる力を授けてくれるのも焚火の効用といっていいだろう。

Although it is not an immortal lantern, it can be said that the utility of a bonfire is that it gives you the power to live safely and healthily for a year.

今年も火を前に若い女性が手を合わせいた。また、ご利益が済んだ古いお札や飾り物を投げ入れる人もいた。
そんな処理も含め、焚火の効用を改めて感じた次第である。

This year too, young women joined hands in front of the fire. Others threw in old bills and ornaments that had been profitable.
Including such processing, I felt the utility of the bonfire again.
