英文回想録(「アオハルへのレクイエム」英語版)

ネイティヴの先生に添削してもらいながら長めのエッセイを書き上げてみました。文筆活動を英語でやるのは新鮮で楽しかったし、多くの学びがありました。

FAREWELL to the INVALUABLE DAYS
Running along a river that runs near my home, I looked back upon my memories of this grade-2 year at my school and reflected how happy I was. They are filled with invaluable moments, and of course, I owe them to my dearest friends. And now, I really appreciate them because I’m a kind of person who believes every big experience is definitely going to be meaningful to his entire life.
This school year, I dedicated myself to the job as a chairman of my school festival’s executive committee, and I’ve learnt numerous things. This dedication gave me the opportunity to make the most of my experiences at my school, and to have tough but very enjoyable days with other members on that committee.
Our committee started April,2021. The committee that would finally hold more than 100 students had only 4 starting members at that time. Since then, It was our major assignment to decide when to hold it, how to prepare for it, and what we can do to attract visitors to it. We also had to take preventive measures to protect every visitor and student from the virus, COVID-19. Speaking of COVID, the virus was a huge barrier against our project and later, we were forced to put off the festival from September to November.
To avoid making you a little confused, let me explain generally what our school festival is like. Hearing the word, “school festival”, some people might think of a festival that is full of fuss, noisy music and dances, and exciting sports events. However, our school festival is not like that. It is just for all the visitors who are mainly primary school students who want to enter our school, and their families. Every year before the pandemic, other school students and graduates of our school also came to it, but this year, because of the pandemic, we had to limit the number of visitors. The solution to this problem was to hold two types of festivals, and to hold one of them twice a year.
What are the two types? The answer might be simple for this age now that Internet society has greatly developed. Yes, one festival is a real festival in the school building and the other is an online festival involving our own HP and IT platforms. Last year, we held the school festival online and focused on creating various videos, 3D recreation of the building and live-broadcasting events. So, our resolution for this year was to regain real conversation and to improve our online content.
Getting more and more students involved, our committee became united and persevered so much, but things were not so easy and there was no limit to our pursuing a better festival. Last summer, under the stifling heat and humidity, I planned a collaboration project with another school that is similar to ours. It was also a boys school in Tokyo. Then, I felt a little tired. This was not only because the project demanded my attention and had to consider the other school but also I actually worked on other jobs at our own festival. However, did this situation make me less determined? -No way. These hard days were necessary to accomplish our goal and my own goal. We never gave up.
In September, due to the pandemic, our festival was postponed, and we moved on to the next step. We were determined to hold a “pre-event” online that month. For that event, I prepared a YouTube live-broadcast in which our school students, maybe about 7 or 8 students, talked about their hobbies. Its concept was this: ”students should show themselves, not things they made” “What interests us must not only be funny videos that they made but also their own personalities and how they view the world.”
The event was successful. One student talked about his game programming, and another talked about his passion for Japanese history. Other topics were: how to enjoy the Shonan area (, Kanagawa prefecture), how intriguing Japanese trains are, the attractiveness of the Japanese university relay marathon, and one student’s exciting life of creating cinematic videos with his drone. These stories really indicated the variety of viewpoints that are hidden in our school. At most 600 visitors watched our live YouTube video. This made us feel the existence of people who were looking forward to our main festival, and later, this feeling motivated us to a large extent.
As interesting online content, I want to mention “Extreme-Commuting”. That is an irregular event in which we, our school students, do some activities before arriving at school in the morning. The point is to change commuting from an ordinary morning custom to an extraordinary one. We held 4 events, and made 5 feature videos that were uploaded to our school’s YouTube channel. The number of students who joined it was around 10, and for example, in one of the events, we visited shrines and had a competition, comparing scores we gained in relation to how many shrines we visited and how far the shrines were. This “Extreme-Commuting” was first carried out by my friend and I, being influenced by what our homeroom teacher had talked about, which is also called “Extreme-Commuting”, but for the adults who commute to work. What we did was just to bring the idea to young students, but it also gave us the chance to enjoy our daily lives.
Like these, we created many interesting ideas. Our committee members started a regular radio-broadcasting program on YouTube and Spotify, and others (who were in lower grades) brought an IT system in which visitors can enjoy 3D games in the virtual school building. This online content was full of our various characters and personalities.
Here, don’t forget we were also preparing for the “real” festival. Not only the committee members, but also each club activity member who set up a booth were busy and tried to maximize attractiveness under virus-preventing restrictions. Later, a friend of mine wrote this: ”We stayed late at school to prepare for the festival and had a very tough time. However, for two days leading up to the festival, I felt like things started to fall into place. I was so excited seeing what we spent a half year planning become a reality.”
On the 27th and 28th November the festival was held both online and at our real school building. I was interviewed by some educational newspaper companies and guided the reporters around the school. Showing what we created and being praised for it made me so happy, and we had real conversations on all aspects of the festival. This was a great opportunity to highlight the attractions and benefits of our festival. Geography club, history club, biology club, physics club, chemistry club, train club, baseball club, brass band club, rock band club… all the club members were also energetic and enthusiastic. So, we felt a great sense of pride seeing the visitors have such a wonderful time.
The online festival was enjoyed by thousands of people. One live-broadcasting event got nearly 4000 views in total. I also participated in that event as a host of interacting games with the collaborating school. These online events had no technological problems because some students working in the festival picked up some IT skills and had prepared for it very well.
During these two days, we all expressed our identities, united as a big group of young adults committing ourselves to the big event.
By the way, what does the word “meaningful” mean? I can say that this experience was meaningful to my life, but what does it “mean” exactly? It feels beyond my description…
At any rate, our festival has finished. We are filled with a great sense of accomplishment. We have looked into each other’s eyes and said, “ It was really great!”
It has finished, and this is the reality. Running out of my breath along that river, I remember that I am alive. I am now moving forward, for another new goal. My moving forward will never end. What does that mean?
Muttering to myself, “Yeah, I will keep moving forward to accomplish new goals and to spend new meaningful days, like running along this river now.”
Then, it dawned on me. New meaningful days will give “meaning” to the past meaningful days. Someday, I will feel like this: ”that experience at my high school gave me these skills. So, that was meaningful to my life”.
We don’t know and we can’t know the “meaning” of our “meaningful” days if we don’t move forward.
So I believe, moving forward is an indispensable action to find the “meaning” of our own past “meaningful” moments…

私たちの委員会は2021年4月に始まりました。最終的に100人以上の学生を収容する委員会には、当時4人のスターティングメンバーしかいませんでした。それ以来、いつ開催するか、どのように準備するか、そして訪問者を引き付けるために何ができるかを決めることが私たちの主要な任務でした。また、すべての訪問者と学生をウイルスCOVID-19から保護するための予防措置を講じる必要がありました。 COVIDと言えば、ウイルスは私たちのプロジェクトに対する大きな障壁であり、その後、私たちは9月から11月までフェスティバルを延期することを余儀なくされました。

ここでは、「本物の」フェスティバルの準備もしていたことを忘れないでください。委員会のメンバーだけでなく、ブースを設置した各クラブ活動メンバーも忙しく、ウイルス対策の制限の下で魅力を最大限に発揮しようとしました。後に、私の友人はこう書いています。「私たちはお祭りの準備のために学校に遅くまで残り、とても大変な時間を過ごしました。ところが、お祭りに至るまでの2日間、物事がうまくいき始めたような気がしました。半年間の計画に費やしたことが現実になるのを見て、とても興奮しました。」

この2日間、私たちは皆、大きなイベントに参加する若者の大きなグループとして団結し、アイデンティティを表明したのでした。
ところで、「有意義」という言葉はどういう「意義」「意味」でしょうか？この経験は私の人生にとって有意義だったと言えますが、それは正確にはどういう「意義」でしょう？この質問は私の説明を超えているように感じます…
とにかく、フェスティバルは終わりました。私たちは大きな達成感に満ちています。私たちはお互いの目を見て、「本当に素晴らしかったです！」と言い合いました。
フェスティバルは終わりました、そしてこれは現実です。その川に沿って息を切らして、私は生きていることを覚い出します。私は今、別の新しい目標のために前進しています。私の前進は決して終わりません。どういう意味でしょうか？
「そうだ、私は新しい目標を達成し、今この川に沿って走るような、新しい意味のある日々を過ごすために前進し続けるんだ。」と自分自身につぶやきます。

前進しなければ、「有意義な」日々の「意義」、「意味のある」日々の「意味」を知ることはできません。ですから、前進することは、私たち自身の過去の「意味のある」瞬間の「意味」を見つけるために不可欠な行動であると私は信じているのです…
