僕もあと何回、満月を見るのだろう。
先週は中秋の名月だった。久しぶりに満月を見た。
坂本龍一さんの絶筆となった本には『ぼくはあと何回、満月を見るだろう』というタイトルが付けられている。これは彼が音楽を担当した映画 The Sheltering Sky のエンディングで語られる原作者 Paul Bowles の言葉だ。
『自分が何時死ぬかを知らないから、私たちは人生を枯れることのない井戸のように考えるようになる。しかしながら、何事もできる回数は有限であり、実際のところ、その回数はとても小さいものだ。幼い頃の昼下がりをあと何回、思い出すだろうか？それなしには自分の人生を考えられないほど深く自分の一部になっている、そんな昼下がりをだ。恐らく、四、五回、いや、それほど多くないかもしれない。のぼる満月を見るのは、あと何回だろうか？恐らく二十回くらいだろう。それにもかかわらず、限りがないように思っている。』
月。
光と影がせめぎ合いながら常にかたちを変え続けている。
新月、三日月、半月、満月...そしてまた新月。
月の満ち欠けは、生々流転そのものだ。
すべてのものは常に移り変わり、
生まれて、死に、そして再生する円環にある。
僕もあと何回、満月を見るのだろう。
It was the harvest moon last week. I saw a full moon for the first time in a while. Ryuichi Sakamoto's last book is titled "How many more times will you watch the full moon rise?" These are the words of author Paul Bowles, spoken at the ending of the film "The Sheltering Sky", for which Sakamoto composed the music.
“Because we don't know when we will die, we get to think of life as an inexhaustible well. Yet everything happens only a certain number of times, and a very small number really. How many more times will you remember a certain afternoon of your childhood, an afternoon that is so deeply a part of your being that you can't even conceive of your life without it? Perhaps four, five times more, perhaps not even that. How many more times will you watch the full moon rise? Perhaps 20. And yet it all seems limitless.”

The moon.
A new moon, a crescent moon, a half moon, a full moon... then a new moon.
The moon waxes and wanes periodically.
It symbolizes the idea of metempsychosis.
Everything on earth changes from moment to moment.
All things are in flux through the endless circle of birth, death and rebirth.
How many more times will I watch the full moon rise?
