英字記事(GAFA)を入試問題に!(前半)/再投稿

はじめに

ここでは各和訳が解説目的ではないですから詳細は省きますが、恐らく分からなくなるかもしれない太字部分には余りこだわらず、無視するか適当なウソをついてでも英文を読み進んで下さい。

①: There has been deep-rooted criticism of information technology giants for failing to pay tax commensurate with their enormous profits. Creating rules for a new era must be expedited. Particularly problematic are the four U.S. IT giants, dubbed GAFA.

②: The combined net profit of these companies in the October-December 2018 quarter reached $38.8 billion(about ￥4.3 trillion).

③: Yet under the current situation, tax cannot be imposed on business operators(事業者) that do not have permanent establishments such as branches and factories in Japan.

※commensurate with～に比例する、expedite促進する、dubbedあだ名をつける

先ずは簡易和訳から⇒

①:巨額の利益を得ていながらそれに伴う税金を払っていないIT大企業への批判は根強くある。新時代に向けてのルールを作成(定めるの)は急務である。

特に、問題となるのは米国のIT巨大企業、名づけて(題して/略してでもいいのでは?)GAFA。

②: The combined net profit of these companies in the October-December 2018 quarter reached $38.8 billion(about ￥4.3 trillion).

※netはゴルフをする人なら分かりますが、受験生はgrossとnetの区別GDPとGNPなど、quarterは1/4ですが企業の決算などでは四半期と言います。

②の簡易和訳⇒４社合わせた2018第３四半期の純利益は388億ドル(4兆３千億円)。

③: Yet under the current situation, tax cannot be imposed on business operators(事業者) that do not have permanent establishments such as branches and factories in Japan.　

※permanent恒久的な、establishmentは色々な意味がありますがsuch as 以下との関係から事業所や施設を意味します。

③の簡易和訳⇒しかし、現状では、日本に工場や支店を常設していない事業者には課税できない。

和文or英文要約

これらの和訳をもとに要約文を50～60字の和文or英語で書いてみます。

この yetで始まる段落が起承転結の「転」の部分。これらの英文に続く段落④があと1つありますが、当然次に来る④の「結」部へと向かっていき、そこには起承転結の「起と結の合同相似(テーマの再確認)」が予想されます。このような英文の展開と受験の論説系英文には酷似したものがあります。


これを私はサンドイッチのパターンと呼んでいますが、入試の論説系英文に頻出の英文構成なんです!!

④の英字記事: It is excessively unfair that domestic companies have to compete with in the same market with such IT companies that are exempt from paying taxes. Reformulating rules for a wide range of matters, from taxation to the handling of personal data, is urged.

※be exempt fromは後に続く単語、又は文脈から想像できると思います。

④の簡易和訳⇒国内の企業が同じ市場でそのような課税を免れるIT巨大企業と競合することは極めて不公平。課税から個人データ管理までの広範囲に及ぶ法律の改正が急務である。

さてこの①～④の要旨を50～60字の英語で書くとなると⇒後半に続く
