Children's Cruelty #37

     Children can be very cruel because they see things straight and express what they feel without thinking about what comes next.  One would say, "Your hair is weird."  Another would say, "Are you a boy or a girl?"  I remember hearing one kid saying, "Your mom looks like a dinosaur."
     They get worse in elementary school.  They pick an ugly classmate.  They hate catching cooties or even enjoy catching them.
     I recently have finished reading a novel called "WONDER".  The book is about a boy who has severe facial deformity because of Treacher Collins syndrome.  Children around the kid are innocent enough to react the way the boy hates.  But the boy grew up strong with his family and his classmate.  From the novel, you can feel cruelty and warmth people have.  
     A lot of children are cruel when they are young, but I believe they will learn how to support each other and eventually grow to have warm hearts.

　私は最近『ワンダー　君は太陽』という小説を読み終えたところだ。それはトリーチャー・コリンズ症候群によって顔がひどく変形した男の子についての話だった。周りの子どもたちは素直で、その男の子が嫌がるような反応を示すのだ。しかし男の子は家族やクラスの友だちとたくましく育っていく。その小説からは人々が持つ残酷さと温かさを感じることができる。
　子どもは小さい時には残酷だが、お互いを支える術を学び、最後には成長して温かい心を持つようになるものだと信じている。
