Be an empty bag and stop thinking.
This is the first step in my Butoh workshop and requires constant questioning of yourself." Have I not been thinking?"

空っぽの袋になり、考えるのをやめましょう。
舞踏ワークショップの最初のステップであり、常に自分への問いかけが要求されます。"私は考えてなかっただろうか？"

If you get carried away like a child, that may be the best condition for an empty bag.

子供のように夢中になれば、それが空っぽの袋のベストコンディションなのかもしれない。

This workshop was an experimental challenge to the body that had no answers and just asked itself. The movement was to accompany the inner voice from the body.

今回のワークショップでは答えがなくただただ自分に問いかける、実験的な体への挑戦を行った。身体からの内なる声に動きを添わせていく。

In everyday life, you are always thinking, caring, and conscious of others, but in this place, it is a safe place where no one judges you.

日常では常に頭をつかったり気をつかったり他者を意識するものですが、この場所では誰もあなたを批判しない安全な場所。

Relax and be honest with your feelings, or follow gravity and feel nature. This sensitive area is as delicate as a soap bubble, and when you start thinking, your inner voice disappears.

リラックスして自分の気持ちに素直になったり、重力に従って自然を感じる。この繊細な領域はシャボン玉のように繊細で、考え始めると内なる声は消えてしまう。

When you think, the movements you were doing suddenly feel too complicated to do, like a witch who can no longer fly on her broom.

考えると行っていた動きが急に複雑に感じてできなくなったり、箒で飛べなくなった魔女のように。

我妻恵美子舞踏ワークショップ in ハリファックス Butoh workshop (20 April ~ 15 June)

舞踏という非常に興味深い身体芸術をもっと学びたい方のために我妻恵美子による舞踏ワークショップを開催します。踊りの経験がなくても楽しんでご参加いただけます。

Butoh workshop by Emiko Agatsuma will be held for those who want to learn more about this very interesting physical art form. For all levels. No dance experience is necessary.

舞踏公演「Ladder 梯子」Butoh performance (28, 29 June)

カナダ・ハリファックスの芸術家Miya Turnbull によるお面のアートと日本の舞踏家我妻恵美子による共同制作の舞台が6月28日から29日、ハリファックスのバスストップシアターにて行われます。日系カナダ人の歴史をテーマに3ヶ月間リサーチと創作を重ね、語られることのなかった深い悲しみや愛情を身体で表現します。Gozu Mezu(杉山仁志)による今回のためのオリジナル曲の生演奏も相まって、大迫力の舞台となります。どうぞお見逃しなく！

Miya Turnbull (Halifax based Mask Maker) and Emiko Agatsuma (Tokyo based Butoh Dancer) collaborate and perform at the Bus Stop Theatre in Halifax on June 28-29. After 3 months of research and creation on the theme of Japanese-Canadian history, they will express with their bodies the deep emotions that have never been spoken of. The performance will be so powerful with live music by Gozu Mezu (Hitoshi Sugiyama), who will perform original pieces for "Ladder". Please do not miss it!

このプロジェクトは日系カナダ人の歴史を通して文化的アイデンティティ、移民、世代間の違いといった重要なテーマを探求し、それによって見過ごされてきた歴史に光を当て、互いに学び合いながら新しい気づきを含んだ作品を創り出すことを目的としています。
Miya Turnbull によるお面のアートと我妻恵美子による舞踏が相互に影響を与え合うこの創作は、より多様で包括的な芸術観に貢献し、異文化理解と尊重を進めていきます。また、歴史への新たなアプローチや他分野とのコラボレーションを通じて、芸術における新たな価値の創造を目指します。

The purpose of "Ladder" is to explore important themes of cultural identity, immigration, and generational differences through the history of Japanese Canadians. The project aims to shed light on overlooked history, learn from each other, and create an innovative performance. The interactive creation between mask art by Miya Turnbull and Butoh dance by Emiko Agatsuma can contribute to a more diverse and inclusive outlook on the arts. This project will also promote cross-cultural understanding, respect, and collaboration with other fields of arts.

なぜ日系カナダ人の歴史をテーマに？

Miya Turnbullは日系カナダ人の四世です。彼女は日本に行ったことはありませんが自分のルーツである日本に強い興味を持っています。コロナ禍で芸術家によるオンラインでの交流が盛んになった頃、彼女は我妻恵美子のオンライン舞踏ワークショップを受講しました。話をするうちに我妻はMiyaの作るマスクの不思議な魅力に惹かれ、また自身が日系カナダ人の歴史を全く知らないことに気づきました。特に第二次世界大戦中の日系人が被った財産の没収や強制労働などの事実を知りませんでした。様々な衝突が起きている現代社会において、移民をテーマに作品を創作することで歴史を共に学び共生を考える機会としたいと考えました。

Why is the history of Japanese Canadians chosen as the theme?

Miya Turnbull is a fourth-generation Japanese Canadian. Although she has never been to Japan, she has a strong interest in her Japanese roots. During the COVID-19 pandemic, she participated in Emiko Agatsuma's online Butoh workshop. Through their conversations, Emiko became fascinated by Turnbull's artistic masks, and Emiko realized that she had no knowledge of the history of Japanese Canadians. In particular, she was unaware of the facts such as the confiscation of property and forced labor experienced by Japanese Canadians during World War II. By creating works with immigration as the theme, they aim to promote mutual learning and coexistence in the contemporary world.
