"Alligator Sky" - Owl City; 世界の終わりにさえもワクワクしたい【和訳】
散歩中にiPhoneから流れてきた、Owl Cityの「Alligator Sky」。かなり久しぶりに聴くアダムの声になんだか胸がきゅうっとなった。優しい歌声と軽やかな電子音が耳から脳に伝わって全身に染み込んでいくのを感じた。
やっぱり好きな音楽を聴いて好きな歌詞のことを考えるのって楽しいなぁ。
「Alligator Sky」は、Owl Cityの2枚目のアルバム『All Things Bright and Beautiful』に収録されている。このアルバムからのファーストシングル曲でもある。
ラッパーのShawn Chrystopherをフィーチャリングし、hip-hop要素を織り交ぜた楽曲だ。
アリゲータースカイ、直訳して「ワニの空」。よくわかんないよ。
歌詞サイトの解説を読んだら面白いことが書いてあった。
The phrase “alligator sky” might refer to the Kennedy Space Center, one of NASA’s premier launch sites in Cape Canaveral, Florida. Cape Canaveral is also one of the many places the Florida Alligator calls home. Thus, “alligator sky.”
NASAの発射場のひとつ、ケネディ宇宙センターがあるフロリダ州のカーペカナヴェラルは、ワニの生息地としても有名なんだそう。
宇宙と繋がっているフロリダの空は、ワニの住処のフロリダの空。だからアリゲータースカイ。
Owl Cityの曲には、宇宙をモティーフにしたものが多い。
宇宙という未知の世界の空想、楽しくてわくわくする。
この曲のミュージックビデオでは、宇宙飛行士に扮したアダムとショーンが荒廃した街や砂漠を彷徨っている。世界の終わりのはずなのに、どことなく楽しそうなふたり。土壌や水のサンプルを採取し、風景を映像に記録しながら、最終的にはロケットに乗り込んで飛び立って行く。
この世界観についてアダムがインタビューで語っている。
Everyone’s writing books and shooting films and singing songs about the end of the world and how it’s imminent and how it’s coming, and it’s depressing.
What would it be like if it were exciting to leave? What would everyone be thinking if they were excited to leave Earth because there was something brighter and more beautiful waiting somewhere else?
世界の終わりをテーマにした本・映画・音楽作品は数えきれないほどあるけれど、ほとんどがそれを悲観的に描いている。
そうじゃなくて、地球から旅立つことのワクワクに焦点を当てたのがこの曲だ。地球が終わってしまっても、この宇宙のどこかにはもっと明るくてもっと美しい世界が待っているかもしれない。
地球の終わりにさえも楽しみを見出そうとするポジティブ思考。ネガティブ陰キャのわたしには眩しすぎるくらいだが、Owl Cityの曲に乗るとなぜだか押し付けがましく感じない。わたしの身体にもすんなり入ってくる。
きっとアダムの声が優しいからだろうな。Owl Cityって不思議なアーティストだ。
