Kokuzou Pottery
During the Meiji era, Yamamoto's grandparents realized the high quality of pottery clay in the Funioka and Kazuwa areas of Kurayoshi City. With this in mind, they moved to the area and established their pottery business in 1983. Near Funioka, there is a historical mound from the former Hoki Province called "Kokuzou-san." Inspired by the site, Shuji founded Kokuzou Pottery in 1975.
Gazing upon Mount Daisen every morning and evening, living with the same clay as his grandparents, completely wrapped up in the joy of pottery making, well-loved by those around him, Yamamoto fully embraces his nickname "Kokozou-san."

Symbol
The "Kunizou" mark is stamped on the underside of each piece of pottery. The reason for the imprint is to indicate that a Kunizou craftsman is responsible for the piece. It guarantees its comfort and ease of use. Also, it can be used to know where to go when you wish to purchase pottery again. Clay becomes like a stone when fired, so it will not return to earth unless exposed to weathering for tens of thousands of years.
Jumping Plane Technique
This is a pottery technique for making a pattern with a series of cuts. The edge of a tool called a plane is used. In Japanese, this technique is called "Hibiki (jumping)-Kanna (plane)" because the plane moves as if it were jumping across the surface of the vessel. Tottori Prefecture is home to the Tottori Sand Dunes, a famous tourist attraction. The wind blowing from the ocean creates regular wind ripples that cover the entire surface of the dunes. One of Kokuzou Pottery's representative designs uses the jumping plane technique to express this natural phenomenon.
Senmon Method
This is a method of scraping off the glaze with a needle after it is applied. Wherever the glaze remains will become white after firing. In contrast, the brown of the iron-bearing clay will peek out from the needle-scraped lines. The Milky Way can be seen in every city, town, and village in Tottori Prefecture, an excellent place for astronomical observation.
Characteristics of Kokuzou White Glaze
Kokuzou Pottery is particular about the white color of their glaze, which was created to enhance the dining experience and express the vibrance of each ingredient. They are committed to a white color that makes poured drinks gleam with beauty. They strive for a white glaze that will bring out the best in whatever is served, durable enough to withstand years of use, and with a comfortable feel in your hands. The characteristic of the white glaze deepens with time, and each day you spend using it adds to its warmth.
