March 26, 2023 Mexico (3), Bad Experiences（メキシコ（3）、苦い体験）

A few months after my visit to Mexico, I had another chance to visit Mexico. I got a message from that woman who had lived in Mexico for many years that a trade fair would be held in a few months. I looked into the details of the fair and found it might give me a business chance with Mexican companies. So, I decided to go to the fair. It was held in Guadalajara instead of the capital. At the fair, the woman and I visited a lot of booths of Mexican companies but failed again. As a result, I had to return to Japan empty-handed.
The city gave me another lesson. It was when I had dinner with her in a Mexican restaurant. I let her order the food as I could not speak Spanish well. Then, the ordered dishes came to our table. Among them was a dish, which had what looked like Japanese sweet paper. So, I grabbed for the one at once since I loved Japanese ones so much. But it was a mistake. It was not as sweet as the Japanese ones. Instead, it was so hot that I cried and asked for water.
The woman, who sit down across the table from me, laughed when she saw me struggling with the hot pepper. And she warned me that it was jalapeno, a Mexican hot chilli pepper, and that it was not good to eat. That made me realize that this was the jalapeno I had heard about.
Looking back, I was not supposed to be able to eat Japanese green peppers in Mexico.

　メキシコを訪問した数か月後に再び、メキシコを訪問する機会を得ました。長年メキシコに住む例の女性から、数か月後にメキシコで展示会が開催されるとの連絡を受けたのです。
　展示会の詳細を調べたところ、メキシコの会社とのビジネスを始める機会になると考え、展示会に行くことにしました。展示会は、首都のメキシコシティではなく、グアダラハラという街で開催されていました。展示会では、例の女性と共にメキシコの会社のブースを訪問しましたが、また、うまくいきませんでした。そして、手ぶらで帰国する羽目になりました。
また、他にも痛い目にあわされました。女性とメキシコ料理のレストランで夕食をした時のことです。スペイン語が下手なボクは、料理の注文を女性に任せました。すると、注文した料理がテーブルに運ばれてきました。その中に、日本のししとうに似たものが入っている料理がありました。ししとう好きのぼくは、それに飛びつきました。ところが、これが間違いでした。ししとうのように甘くなかったのです。それどころが、涙がでるほどめちゃくちゃ辛く、水を頼むほどでした。
　テーブルの向かいにいた女性は、ボクがししとうと格闘をしているのをみて笑いながら、「食べたのはハラピーニョといってメキシコの辛いとうがらしで、たべてはいけませんよ。」と注意してくれました。これで、これが話に聞いていたハラピーニョかとわかりました。考えてみれば、メキシコでししとうを食べられるはずがありません。
