April 18, 2024: Outrageous Liar （とんでもないウソつき）
I have thought that Shohei Ohtani, an MLB superstar, is one of the world's most tough people. He should have been doing a lot of severe exercises to improve his skills and enhance his physical strength. On the other hand, he is always so calm and gentle with others that it is hard to believe he is an athlete. So he must have a strong mind to do anything. Otherwise, he should not be able to join the games and play as usual in the midst of a scandal.
But there was an idiot, Ippei Mizuhara, with a much stronger mind than Shohei Ohtani. He was Shohei's interpreter and had always been with Shohei since Shohei began to play in MLB. He seemed to be a good partner for Shohei, more than an interpreter. But the idiot was never Shohei’s good partner, but he was the offender who had stolen a huge amount of money from Shohei. When I heard about the news, I was surprised and was at a loss for words. I was very shocked that he was mentally so strong that he could always be with Shohei while stealing Shohei’s money. If I had been him, I would not have been able to stay by and talk with Shohei. In fact, I would not have been able to make eye contact with Shohei and would have tried to keep me away from Shohei as much as possible. In other words, he was so much trapped in his gambling debts that he seemed to have no room to think about anything but paying the debts.
I was also surprised that Ippei had succeeded in unlocking Shohei’s bank account through a phone conversation between him and a bank clerk. I wonder why the clerk did not suspect that the caller might not be Shohei himself. I do not know if the clerk is a fan of the MLB fan or not. But he or she must have known about Shohei, the MLB superstar even if he or she was not. And they must have known that, unlike the natives, Shohei, the bank's big customer, has not yet been able to speak English fluently as seen from interviews after games. So they should have been able to be aware that the caller was not Shohei himself, and impersonated Shohei.
米国大リーグのスーパースター、大谷翔平さんは世界でも屈伸のタフガイだと思っていました。技術向上と体力強化のために、厳しい練習を数多くこなしているはずです。その一方で、アスリートとは思えないほどいつも穏やかで、人にも優しく接しています。何事にも強い精神力を持っているのだと思います。そうでなければ、スキャンダルの渦中にありながら試合に出場し、普段通りのプレーをすることなどできないはずです。
でも、大谷さんよりもはるかに強い心を持ったバカがいました。水原一平です。かれは、大谷さんの通訳で、大谷さんがMLBでプレーするようになってからは、常にそばにいました。大谷さんにとっては通訳以上の良きパートナーだったようです。でも、そのバカはけっして大谷さんの良きパートナーではありませんでした。それどころか、大谷さんから莫大な金を盗んだ犯罪者だったのです。
このニュースを聞いたとき、驚き、開いた口が塞がりませんでした。大谷さんの金を盗みながら、いつも彼と一緒にいられるほど精神的に強かったことにとてもショックを受けました。もしボクが彼だったら、大谷さんのそばにいて話をすることはできなかったでしょう。それどころか、大谷さんと目を合わせることもできなかったでしょうし、できるだけ大谷さんから遠ざかろうとしたでしょう。彼はそれほどギャンブルの借金に追われていて、借金を返すこと以外考える余地がなかったようです。
また、彼が銀行との電話のやりとりで大谷さんの銀行口座のロックを解除できたことにも驚きました。応対した銀行員は、電話の主が大谷さん本人ではないと疑わなかったのが不思議です。その人が、大リーグのファンかどうかは知りません。知らないとしても、スーパースターの大谷さんのことをしらないわけがありません。そして銀行の大事なお客さんである大谷さんが、英語を流暢に話せないことを試合後のインタビューなどでわかっていたはずです。だから、その電話の主が、大谷さん本人ではなく、大谷さんになりすましていると気付けたはずです。
