August 14, 2023: Cashback, Living in the UK （キャッシュバック、英国での生活）
When I knew what cashback meant in the UK, I was reminded that practice makes perfect. At that time, I thought, and my wife also admitted, that my English was better than hers. But that was not always the case. As to the word cashback, she had learnt it earlier than me and had made full use of it. One day when we were living in the UK, we went shopping in at a Sainsbury’s supermarket. After we picked up what we wanted to buy, we went to the checkout. Then, I was asked by a cashier if I needed cashback. But I could not understand what she was saying. I did not know the word at the time and was struggling with what to say. Then, my wife cut in front of me and told the cashier that she needed no cashback. I was very surprised to see that she knew the word and made full use of it. After the checkout, she explained what cashback meant to me and I fully understood it. I also realized that I did not know the common word in our daily lives in the UK. That meant that I had still not got used to life in the UK. On the other hand, my wife had already gotten used to it.
It just goes to show that practice makes perfect. Since then, I tried to learn what she had been doing in her daily life, which helped me to learn British customs and practices.
英国で「キャッシュバック」の意味を知ったとき、つくづく「習うより慣れろ」だと思いました。その当時、ボクは妻より英語ができると思っていました。そして、妻もそれを認めていました。でも、必ずしもそうではなかったのです。キャッシュバックと言葉については、妻は僕より早く学び、使いこなしていました。英国に住んでいた時のある日、ボクたちは、セインズベリーというスーパーに買い物に行きました。買いたいものを選んで、レジに向かったところ、レジ係の人から、キャッシュバックは必要ないかと尋ねられました。その時、ボクはこの言葉を知らず、何と答えていいのか戸惑っていたところ、妻が割り込んできて、キャッシュバックはいらないと答えたのです。この時、妻がこの言葉を理解し、使いこなしているのを知りびっくりしました。支払いをした後に、妻にこの言葉の意味を説明してもらい、ボクも理解しました。また、ボクは、英国の日常生活で当たり前の言葉を分かっていない事も悟りました。自分はまだ英国の生活に馴染んでおらず、妻のほうがずっと馴染んでいたのです。
これがまさに「習うより慣れろ」の典型例です。その時以来、ボクは妻の日常の行動を学ぶようにしました。そのおかげで、英国の習慣や慣習を学ぶことができました。
