March 14, 2023: WBC, Netherlands （WBC、オランダ）
The 2023 World Baseball Classic, the World Cup of Baseball, has taken place in Japan and Taiwan. Ten teams competed in the group stage. Among them, I was cheering for Japan and the Netherlands. The Dutch team surprised me right from the start. It beat Cuba, a baseball giant. I thought the team was not strong enough to beat the giant since the Netherlands is not a baseball country but a football country.
I had lived in the country for about three years. But I never saw the local people play baseball there. It was only the Japanese that played baseball there. So I thought the team would not be able to win against the baseball giants.
But the team member made me find out why the team was so strong. Most of them come from Curacao and Aruba in the Caribbean Sea. These are parts of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. Among the members is Ramon Balentien, who had played for the Yakult Swallows in Japan. These players should be playing for or have played for the MLB.
I expected the team to make the quarter-finals. But it lost its last two games and missed the quarter-finals.
WBCが日本と台湾で開催されています。WBCは野球のワールドカップです。グループステージでは10チームが対戦しました。その中で、ボクは、日本とオランダを応援していました。そのオランダが、いきなり驚かせてくれました。なんと、野球の強豪国のキューバに勝ったのです。オランダはサッカー大国なので、野球で強豪国に勝てるほど強いと思っていませんでした。
オランダに3年ほど住んだことがありますが、現地の人が野球なりソフトボールをやっているのを見たことがありません。野球やソフトボールをやっていたのは日本人だけでした。なので、オランダが野球で強豪国に勝つなんてあり得ないと思っていました。
でも、オランダチームのメンバーを見みて、オランダが強い理由がわかりました。殆どの選手がカリブ海のキュラソーやアルーバ出身なのです。キュラソーやアルーバは、オランダ王国の構成国です。メンバーの中には、ヤクルトにいたバレンティンもいます。こうした選手は、大リーグでプレーをしているかその経験があるはずです。
オランダの準々決勝進出を期待していたのですが、最後の2戦で負けて、進出を逃しました。
