August 4, 2024: Rice （お米）

Japan is now struggling with a rice shortage. My wife also complains about the surge in the price. She always goes to a supermarket to buy her favourite rice. When she comes home with the bag, she always say, ‘Oh, it’s heavy’. In particular, it is tough to bring it back in the heat. When I hear it, I sometimes urge her to buy it online. She knows that it is the best way, but she is reluctant. For now, she seems to find no better rice than it in terms of price and quality. I do not mind the quality at all and have said nothing about the boiled rice I have eaten. But she still seems to like the rice from her favourite supermarket and cannot give it up. Nevertheless, as she gets older, she will have to change her priorities and will have to buy it online.
When I lived in Europe, I used to eat some rice for dinner at home. I used to buy the rice at a Japanese grocery store. But it was not the one from Japan, but from California, the USA. In the beginning, I was concerned about the quality, but to no avail. It tasted as good as or better than the rice I used to eat in Japan before I came to Europe. I always enjoyed it as much as I did in Japan. It might not be as good as the branded rice in Japan but was good enough for me.
Perhaps it is now the time to import the Californian rice into Japan. It will help to alleviate the rice shortage that Japan is currently suffering from. It will also give Japanese consumers a new choice. I do not know how much it will cost if it is imported into Japan. But it might be reasonable if it were not for additional charges such as high import duties. In particular, it could be cooked much better with the support of Japanese rice cookers which have seen significant improvements.

　日本は今、米不足に見舞われています。妻も米の価格が上がって、不満を漏らしています。いつも、近所のスーパーで、お気に入りの米を買いに行きます。米袋を持って帰ってくると、いつも『重い』と悲鳴をあげます。特に、暑い中持って帰るのは大変そうです。その叫びを聞くと、ボクは、ネットで買うように勧めます。妻も、それが一番いいことはわかっているのですが、いやそうです。今のところ、価格と品質の両面で、この米が一番バランスがよく、他はかなわないようです。ボクは、品質にはまったくこだわりがなく、これまでご飯については文句を言ったことはありません。でも、妻は、お気に入りのスーパーの米が好きなようで、諦められないようです。とはいえ、年を取るにつれて優先順位が変わり、近いうちにネットで買うようになるでしょう。
　ヨーロッパに住んでいた頃は、家で夕食にご飯を食べていました。お米は日本食料品店で買っていました。でも、日本産のものではなく、アメリカのカリフォルニア産のものでした。当初は品質が心配だったのですが、取り越し苦労でした。欧州に来る前に日本で食べていたお米と同じかそれ以上の味でした。日本にいるときと変わらず、おいしくいただきました。日本のブランド米には及ばないかもしれませんが、ボクには十分美味しかったです。
今こそ、このカリフォルニア米を日本に輸入すべき時なのかもしれません。日本が苦しんでいる米不足を解消するのに役立つでしょう。また、日本の消費者に新しい選択肢を与えることにもなります。日本に輸入された場合、いくらかかるかはわかりません。でも、高い輸入関税などの余計な費用がなければ、妥当な値段になると思います。特に、最近は、日本の炊飯器が大幅に改良されたことで、より美味しくいただけるはずです。
