December 21, 2023: Desperate Christmas （絶望的なクリスマス）

Akira-san has been waiting for other writers' works about a desperate Christmas. I do not know if this article is what he is looking for. For better or worse, I have not had a desperate Christmas. Of course, I have celebrated Christmas Day with my family every year just as others do. But the celebration is very simple, not festive. In other words, I only have a small party with my family at home. When my daughter was a child, we used to put up a Christmas tree and decorate it with ornaments. But one day, when she grew up, we stopped. At dinner, we celebrated the day with roast chicken and sparkling wine. We, all three, loved roast chicken with garlic so much that we could easily eat up the whole chicken. But we are no longer able to do so after my daughter was married. The whole chicken is too much for my wife and me. So we stopped buying the whole one. Instead, we enjoy Kentucky fried chicken at Christmas.
While I was writing this article, I remembered a bitter memory of a Christmas day as a child. That day, my family and I were sitting under the Kotatsu in the living room and celebrating Christmas with cakes and coffee. And there was a Christmas tree with lights in the room. The lights were illuminated by a plug-in cable. Then, my father asked me to bring a knife from the kitchen to cut the cake. So I went to the kitchen and found a knife. Then I grabbed the knife and was in a hurry to go back to the living room. Then, I got caught on the cable of the lights and the tree fell. At that moment, my father got upset and disappointed about what happened, which spoiled the whole atmosphere. Then we stopped the small party and I went back to my room. That was the most miserable Christmas in my life.

　この記事を書きながら、子供の頃のクリスマスの苦い記憶を思い出しました。 その日は家族とリビングでコタツに入り、ケーキとコーヒーでクリスマスを祝っていました。 そして部屋にはイルミネーションが点灯したクリスマスツリーがありました。 ライトはコンセントに差し込んだケーブルで、点灯していました。 その時、ケーキを切るために台所からナイフを持ってくるよう父に言われたので、キッチンに行きました。そこで、ナイフを見つけ、それを握って、急いでリビングに戻りました。 すると、照明のケーブルに足が引っかかってツリーが倒れてしまいました。 その瞬間、父はそれに気分を害し、がっかりしてしまいました。これで、雰囲気が台無しになってしまい、小さなパーティーは中止になりました。ボクも、自分の部屋に戻りました。 これが、ボクの人生で一番悲惨なクリスマスでした。
