November 20, 2023:Ochanomizu (2), Cafe and Book （お茶の水(2)、喫茶店と本）
After seeing my doctor at a hospital in Ochanomizu, Tokyo, I went to a cafe, Hodaka, for breakfast. It is an old and well-established cafe and one of the most famous cafes in the town. It looked like a mountain lodge inside and outside with old and comfortable sofas. So I relaxed and enjoyed my breakfast of a slice of toast and an iced coffee. It was also the moment when I was relieved to see that I had nothing wrong with my artificial hip. The shop was so comfortable that I stayed there for about an hour. But I was worried about its future. I was concerned that it might close down sooner or later, as it was only run by an elderly owner and a part-time university student.
After that, I went to my favourite bookstore, Maruzen. Like last year, it had a sale of English books and I bought a book just for 500 yen. Then, I walked around the store looking for books that looked interesting. And I found 3 Japanese books that interested me.: Lessons of Humour by Shigehiko Toyama, Reflections on the philosophy of the history of mankind by Johann Gottfried Herder, and an English grammar book.
But I came back home without buying any Japanese book. I looked them up over the Internet at home carefully. Then, I found and borrowed Toyama’s book at a library in my town and bought Herder’s book.
I am now reading Herder’s book mainly, but it is too difficult to understand and I can only a few pages a day. While I am reading it, I always begin to fall asleep.
御茶ノ水の病院で診察を受けた後、朝食を食べに喫茶店「穂高」に行きました。老舗の喫茶店で、お茶の水でも有名な喫茶店のひとつです。店は山小屋のようで、古くて座り心地のいいソファーがありました。そこでリラックスしてトースト1枚とアイスコーヒーの朝食をいただきました。人工股関節に異常がないことが分かり、ほっとした瞬間でもありました。あまりに居心地がよかったので、1時間ほどその店にいました。でも、この店の将来が心配になりました。店は、高齢の店主と大学生のアルバイトの２人だけで切り盛りしていて、そのうち閉店に追い込まれるのではと心配になってしまいました。
その後、お気に入りの書店・丸善に行きました。昨年同様、英書のセールをやっていたので、500円で一冊買いました。その後、店内を歩き回って面白そうな本を探したところ、気になる本が3冊ありました。外山滋比古さんの『ユーモアのレッスン』、ヘルダーの『人類歴史哲学考 』と英文法の本です。
でも、店では本を買わずに帰り、インターネットでじっくり調べました。そしたら、外山さんの本は図書館にあったので、そこで借りました。そして、ヘルダーの本を買いました。
今はヘルダーの本を中心に読んでいますが、難しすぎて1日に数ページしか読めません。読んでいるうちにいつも眠くなってしまうのです。
