October 1, 2023: Tips in the US restaurants(1) （米国レストランのチップ事情(1)）
Recently, I have often seen tips at a restaurant in the USA being picked up in the news. The nation has a custom to tip 15 to 20% of the bill at a restaurant. But some people argue that this is too much. I also heard that Junko Kubo living in the US talked about it on a TV show. She said that she does not go out to eat since she has to tip a lot.
It reminded me of bitter memories in the US. It was about 15 years ago when I went to the USA on business for the first time. I dined at a Japanese restaurant next to my hotel. I took a few Japanese dishes and Japanese sake. After I finished them, I asked a waitress for a bill. As I had done in Europe, then, I added about 10% to the bill and paid with a credit card. As soon as I got the receipt, I left the restaurant, then, the waitress followed me and asked me to tip more. I was very confused about it. I did not understand what was wrong with me. But I was reluctant to give the extra tip. Then, she went back to the restaurant without thanking me. It was very humiliating because I had never received any complaints about tips before. I was so confused and unhappy that it took me a while to calm down. So After I returned to my hotel room, I reviewed what was wrong with me and checked everything I did in the restaurant. I could not find anything wrong with me. I also checked how the restaurant served to me. The food was not excellent but it was what I used to taste in Japanese restaurants outside Japan. The same goes for the waitress. She did not fully satisfy me but what I used to be served before. As a result, nothing wrong was found with the restaurant or me, and I concluded that she just wanted more tips.
最近、米国のレストランではらうチップに関するニュースをよく目にします。米国のレストランでは、15%から20%のチップを払う習慣があります。でも、このチップが高すぎると騒がれているのです。米国に住んでおられる、アナウンサーの久保純子さんも、テレビ番組で、話されていました。レストランのチップが高すぎて、外食にいけないとのこと。
ボクも、米国のチップでは苦い経験があります。ボクが、米国の地に初めて足を踏み入れたのは15年位前です。ホテルの隣の日本食レストランで夕食を取りました。数品の日本料理を食べ、日本酒を飲みました。食べ終えて、ウェイトレスに精算を頼むと、請求書が来たので、10%のチップを加えて、クレジットカードで支払いました。領収書を受け取り、レストランを出ると、ウェイトレスが追いかけてきて、チップはもっと必要というのです。これを聞いたとき、ボクは大変戸惑いました。ボクのどこに問題があるのかわかりませんでした。でも、しぶしぶチップを追加で支払いました。そうすると、ウェイトレスは「ありがとう」も言わずに、帰っていきました。チップで文句を言われたことがないボクにとっては、大変屈辱的でした。非常に困惑すると共に不快だったので、冷静さを取り戻すのに時間がかかりました。ホテルの部屋に戻った後、何が悪かったのかを検証しました。ボクがレストランでやったことを検証しましたが、問題は見つかりませんでした。また、レストランのサービスについても検証しました。料理は、素晴らしいと言えるものではなく、海外の日本食レストランでよくある味でした。また、ウェイトレスも同様で、ボクには満足のいくものではありませんでしたが、よくあるサービスでした。その結果、レストランとボクの両者に非はありませんでした。そして、ウェイトレスがもっとチップを欲しかっただけと結論付けました。
