October 21, 2023: Shinji Tanimura （谷村新司さん）

A singer, Shinji Tanimura, has passed away. When I heard about it on the news, I was stunned and speechless. He was still too young, at 74 years old, to leave this world. I felt bereft and lost my drive to do anything all day since. I just kept listening to his song, Sarai. Since that day, I have been listening to it every day.
Looking back on my life, he has always been with me since his group Alice released the song Fuyu no Inazuma (Lightening in Winter) in 1977. His songs have cheered me up a lot. Among them is the ‘Champion’, which I love the most. It has encouraged me to face anything. It has also helped me to enjoy karaoke. Before I found the song, I hated karaoke because I had a tin ear and was very bad at singing a song. I am not an ordinary poor singer, but I am so bad as to be admitted by everyone. I used to fail in music classes at school and to be teased by my classmates and teachers. So, I always tried not to go to a karaoke box. But I had to sing a song there since I began to work. Whenever I went there, I was frustrated because I had no song to sing. I did not mind but did not want to sing a song as I was so poor at singing that my superiors and colleagues could not bear to hear me. But one day, I tried the song Champion in a karaoke shop. Then, I was surprised to see myself sing it much better than other songs. And my colleague was surprised, too. Since then, it has become my favourite song, and I always sing it when I go to karaoke. It was the greatest gift from him. I hope he is at peace now.

　歌手の谷村新司さんが亡くなった。ニュースで知った時は、茫然とし、言葉がありませんでした。まだ、74歳とお若く、この世を去るには早すぎです。その日は、気持ちがなえてしまい、何もする気になれませんでした。そして、ひたすら「サライ」を聞きました。それからは、毎日、この曲をずっと聞いています。
　ボクの人生を振りかえると、アリスが「冬の稲妻」を発表した1977年以降、新司さんはずっとぼくの側にいてくれました。彼の歌で元気づけられました。なかでも、一番好きなのが「チャンピオン」です。この歌は、物事に立ち向かう勇気をくれます。そして、この歌は、ボクにカラオケの楽しみをくれました。この歌を知る前は、カラオケが大嫌いでした。音痴で、歌が下手でした。並みの下手さではありません。誰もが下手と認めるほどのひどさです。学校では、常に音楽で落第点を取り、同級生や先生にからかわれていました。なので、カラオケボックスにはいかないようにしていました。でも、社会人になってから、歌わざるを得なくなりました。行っても、歌える曲がないので、いつも悩んでいました。ボク自身は、歌うことは嫌ではありませんが、歌いたくなかったです。上司や同僚が聞くに耐えられないほどの下手さだったからです。
　でも、ある日、カラオケ店で「チャンピオン」を歌ってみたのです。そしたら、他の曲よりうまく歌えたのです。同僚もびっくりです。それ以来、この曲がボクのお気に入りになり、カラオケに行くといつもこの曲を歌っています。新司さんからの最高の贈り物です。
