March 22, 2024: Japan Professional Baseball League, Hanshin Tigers（プロ野球リーグ戦、阪神タイガース）

Talking of baseball, Shohei Otani, a Japanese MLB superstar, has been in the limelight over the last few weeks. But in Japan, the 2024 professional baseball league starts in two weeks, too. Until about one week ago, it had been exciting me, but not now. My favourite team, the Hanshin Tigers, seem to have many problems and need more time to clear them. As long as I hear and see the results of the pre-season matches, I am sorry, but I have to say that the team cannot win the championship for the second year in a row.
About starting pitchers, Masahi Ito and Shoki Murakami do not seem to be in the same form as last season. Kotaro Otake is also far from his best with an elbow problem. Set-uppers and closers cannot be expected to perform as well as they did last year, either. In particular, Yuta Iwasada, one of the set-uppers I expected the most, is in poor form and will not be able to go on the bench when the league starts.
Fielders also have problems, and, in particular, I am very concerned about Takumu Nakano, a second baseman. He only made a few hits and has struck out a lot in the pre-season matches. Probably, he may have to be replaced by Kento Itohara. It is Yusuke Oyama, a clean-up hitter, who has concerned me a lot. He seems also to be struggling at the plate. On the other hand, new players, such as Ukyo Maekawa and Dan Onodera, are coming to the fore. And Shota Morishita, an outfielder, is expected to perform much better this year. I hope that he will do well enough to establish himself as a true clean-up hitter.
Overall, the Tigers need more time to correct their problems and cannot be expected to make a flying start. It means that the team has to depend on the coach, Akinobu Okada, again much more than last year.

　野球といえば、ここ数週間、日本のMLBのスーパースター、大谷翔平選手が脚光を浴びていました。でも、日本では、2024年のプロ野球が2週間弱で開幕します。1週間ほど前まではワクワクしていたのですが、今は違います。ひいきの阪神タイガースがいろいろと問題を抱えているようで、それをクリアするにはもう少し時間が必要なようです。オープン戦の結果を見聞きする限り、残念ながら、2連覇は難しいと言わざるを得ません。
　先発投手陣については、伊藤と村上の両投手が昨シーズンほど調子よくなさそうです。大竹投手にいたっては、肘の故障でベストの状態からはほど遠いです。セットアッパーやクローザーも昨年のような活躍は期待できそうにありません。特に、一番期待していたセットアッパーの一人、岩貞投手は不調で、開幕時にはベンチ入りできないでしょう。
　野手陣にも問題があります。特にセカンドの中野選手が非常に心配です。オープン戦では、ヒットは数本しか打てず、三振ばかりしていました。おそらく、糸原選手と交代になるでしょう。更に気になるのが４番の大山選手です。彼もまた打撃で苦しんでいます。その一方で、前川選手や小野寺選手などの若手が台頭してきています。そして外野手の森下選手は、今年はかなり成績が期待できそうです。真の４番打者としての地位を確立するくらいの活躍を期待したいです。
　全体的に、チームには問題点を修正する時間が必要であり、開幕ダッシュは期待できそうにありません。昨年以上に岡田監督に頼らざるを得ないということでしょう。
