December 2, 2023: Living with Poetry （詩のある暮らし）

For about 60 years before I began to use ‘note’, I had had no interest in poetry. The first time I saw a poem was in a textbook for learning Japanese. But it did not inspire or attract me at all. It was so short that I did not know how to read it. Then, I had seen other poems a couple of times at school. But they had not attracted me. And after I began to work, the poetry became more and more distant from me. So, I had never caught sight of and read poetry.
But I have come to see and read a lot of poems since I began to use the ‘note’. At first, I just read some of them but did not know how to express what I had in my mind after reading them. Nevertheless, I continued to read a lot of poems every day. Then, something seemed to happen in my mind.
One day, I was studying English grammar and found an English poem in a textbook. It inspired me to understand it more deeply and translate it into Japanese. It was so much fun, and I could not stop it. Of course, I needed a lot of help from the internet. In particular, Google Bard was a great help. I would not have been able to understand it so deeply without it.
After that, I was eager to read more English poems and tried to understand and translate some into Japanese. But it did not work well, and I was forced to give it up. I knew that I must study English poems from basics. Since then, I have not done anything about it. But I will try it again soon.

　noteを使い始めるまでの約60年間、詩にはまったく興味がありませんでした。初めて詩を目にしたのは、国語の教科書でした。でも、その詩にはまったく感激せず、魅力も感じませんでした。短すぎて、詠み方がわかりませんでした。その後も、学校で何度か他の詩を目にしましたが、惹かれることはありませんでした。そして社会人になってからは、詩はどんどん遠ざかっていき、詩を目にすることも読むこともありませんでした。
　でも、noteを使うようになってから、たくさんの詩を目にし、読むようになりました。最初は、ただ読むだけで、自分の気持ちをどう表現したらいいのかわかりませんでした。それでも、毎日たくさんの詩を読み続けたところ、ある日、私の中で何かが起こったようです。
　ある日、英文法の本を読んでいたとき、英詩に目が留まり、深く理解したくなったので、日本語に訳し始めました。それがとても楽しくてやめられませんでした。もちろん、インターネットの助けがたくさん必要でした。特にグーグルのバードは大きな助けとなりました。これがなかったら、ここまで深く理解できなかったと思います。
　その後も、もっと多くの英詩を読みたくなり、いくつかの詩を読んで、日本語に訳そうとしました。でも、うまくいかず、あきらめざるを得ませんでした。この時、やはり英詩の基礎から勉強しなければならないと思いました。それ以来、いまのところ何もしていません。でも、近いうちにまたやってみたいと思っています。
