June 11, 2023: Female Field Workers （現場で働く女性たち）

The other day, a TEPCO’s inspector came to my flat to check if the breaker was working properly. I had no surprise to the visit as I knew about it in advance. But the visit had something I had not expected. I expected the inspector to be a man, but in fact, it was a woman. And she came alone. When I heard her voice through the doorbell, I was surprised and got a little nervous to see that the inspector was a woman. On the other hand, she must also have been surprised to see that the resident was a man. And I was alone, too. She came in the late morning hours. She must not have expected that there was a man in the late morning hours as it is usual that there is at least a woman in these hours. Probably, she must have gotten uneasy a little when she found that the resident was a man when she first heard my voice through the doorbell. After I opened the door and welcomed her, I tried to stay away from her as much as possible and stayed in a room that was the furthest away from her.
I know that more and more women are doing field work. In fact, I have seen a female fitter who came to my flat to install an air conditioner. I am grateful for their efforts, but I am concerned about their safety in these troubled times.

　先日、東京電力の検査員の方が我が家のブレーカーの点検に来られた。訪問ついては事前に聞いていたので、それ自体に驚きはありませんでした。でも、予期していなかったこともありました。検査員の方が男性かと思っていたら女性だったのです。しかも、一人でこられました。インターフォン越しに検査員の方の声を聞いて、女性であることを知り、びっくりとすると同時に少し緊張しました。他方、検査員のかたも住人が男性だと分かってびっくりされたのではないかと思います。しかも、住人はボク一人でした。検査員のかたは、午前の遅い時間帯に来られました。この時間帯は、通常、家には女性がいるものなので、検査員の方もまさか男性がいるとは思っていなかったのではないでしょうか。インターフォン越しにボクの声を聞いて、住人が男性と知ったときは、少し不安に思われたのではないかと思います。ドアーを開けて、検査員の方を迎えた後は、できるだけ距離を置こうとして、一番離れた部屋に居ました。
　現場の仕事をされる女性が増えているのはわかっています。実際に、我が家のエアコンの設置作業に女性が来られました。こうした取り組みはありがたいことですが、物騒な昨今、彼女たちの安全が気になりました。
