これだから旅は人生なんだ

インナートリップという旅
私にとっての旅とは、見たことをないものを見て、知らないものを知るということが、主たる動機といえます。もちろん食べること、飲むことも旅のエッセンスではありますが、少し離れて俯瞰すると、自分が日々過ごしている場所からワープして、異空間の中で自分の内面を見つめなおすチャンスを手に入れるためだとも言えます。日常として、日本の中にいると、自分が日本人であるということを意識する機会は、なかなかありませんが、外国へ旅行してみると、周りの人達は外国人であり、自分は異国を旅する日本人であることを簡単に意識することになります。カタコトの現地の言葉で道を訪ねたり、スーパーマーケットで買い物をするときなど、システムや慣習に「へー、この国ではそんななんだ」と戸惑い、感心することも多いです。日本では「これが常識で当たり前」でも、違う国では「それは違って通じない」、この日本と外国の違いを生活するレベルでリアルに理解できる貴重な場と言えるのが海外旅行です。太陽はどこでも平等に地上を照らしますし、お月様は、どこからでも見えるのですが、人が暮らす場所によって感じ方や捉え方も違うということを体験できる素敵なチャンスが旅だといえます。これは日本人である自分自身への旅、インナートリップという自分を再発見する旅≒外国への旅行と考えても良いと思えます。「そんなに哲学的に考えなくてもさぁー、気楽にイタリアでワイン飲めればいいじゃん」という方も、また良しです。あるいは屁理屈好きの旅好きも良しとしましょう。みんな違ってみんな良い海外旅行は、日本人が大好きなイベントであることに違いはないでしょう。

私が初めてイギリスに上陸したのは、ブライトンという観光リゾートの街でした。少し街はずれまで歩くと見晴らしの良い草原にたどり着きます。あの有名な真っ白な崖が遠くに見渡せるなんとも清々しい風景が広がっています。

For me, the main motivation for traveling is to see things I have never seen before and to learn about things I do not know. Of course, eating and drinking are also the essence of travel, but if you look at it from a bird's eye view, you could say that it is to get a chance to warp out of the place where you spend your daily life and reexamine your inner self in a different space. By way of analogy, it is very difficult to identify white in white, but if there is a white circle in red, this is easy to identify. In other words, in everyday life in Japan, it is not easy to be aware of the fact that you are Japanese, but when you travel abroad, you will easily realize that the people around you are foreigners and that you are a Japanese traveling in a foreign country. When you visit a supermarket or ask for directions in the local language, you are often puzzled and impressed by the system and customs, thinking, "Wow, that's the way it is in this country. Traveling abroad is a valuable opportunity to understand the differences between Japan and other countries on a real-life level. The sun shines on the earth equally everywhere, and the moon can be seen from anywhere, but travel is a wonderful opportunity to experience that people feel and perceive things differently depending on where they live. This can be thought of as a trip to yourself as a Japanese person, an inner trip to rediscover yourself ≒ a trip to a foreign country. If you are a traveler who says, "I don't have to be so philosophical, why don't I just relax and drink wine in Italy," that is also fine. Or, if you are a traveler who likes to quibble, good for you. Everyone is different and everyone is good. Traveling abroad is no doubt one of the favorite events of the Japanese people.
