"On Beauty" by Kahlil Gibran

こりゃたまげた。お隣の大学で授業を受けて、帰りに図書館のトイレを使ったら、壁一面になんと詩がかかれていた。

一つの壁を静かに読んでみる。
美しさとは、「目を閉じてみるイメージであり、耳を塞いで聴く歌である。」… なんてきれいな言葉たちなんだろう！
ちょっと課題とかそれどころじゃないっす。って気持ちになってnoteを開き、出会った言葉たちと時間を過ごした。It goes like this…

In winter say the snow-bound, "She shall come with the spring leaping upon the hills." And in the summer heat the reapers say, "We have seen her dancing with the autumn leaves, and we saw a drift of the snow in her hair." All these things have you said of beauty, yet in truth you spoke not of her but of needs unsatisified, and beauty is not a need but an ecstasy. It is not a mouth thirsting nor empty hand stretched forth. But rather an image you would see through you close your eyes and a song you hear through you shut your ears. It is not the sap within the furrowed bark, nor a wing attached to a claw. But rather a garden for ever in bloom and a flock of angels for ever in flight. People of Orphalese, beauty is life when life unveils her holy face. But you are life and you are the veil. Beauty is eternity gazing at itself in a mirror. But you are eternity and you are the mirror.

レバノン系アメリカ人の詩人、ハリール・ジブラーンという人の作品らしい。この詩は、「預言者（the Prophet）」という本に収録されている。彼はアラビア語・英語で作品を作っていて、なんとボストンで教育を受けたらしい。そして、ちょうど昨日イラン人のお友達ができて、イランで話されているファーシー（アラビア語と似ている）という言葉で書かれた詩が美しいという話を聞いていたから、余計に親しみが湧いた。

これは素敵なご縁だ。ハリール・ジブラーンの本を借りて帰ろう。
