#30 Jakaria Mahmood :Predict the future from a global perspective and create products that customers need　- Interview with Beatrusters

Hi, I am Sakura Yagi, a PR representative at Beatrust. Whether you are a regular reader of "Beatrust on note" or a newcomer, thank you for finding this article. "Interview with Beatrusters" is a series of interviews with Beatrust employees, called "Beatrusters". This time we interviewed our Site Reliability Engineer (SRE), Jakaria Mahmood.
We were able to delve deeper into his personal and professional life and thoughts. He has worked as an engineer for a variety of companies, so if you are interested in learning more about his various experiences and how he works at Beatrust, please read on!

・About Jakaria Mahmood

-Could you briefly introduce yourself?
Hi everyone! I'm Jakaria Mahmood from Bangladesh. I joined Beatrust last November as a Site Reliability Engineer (SRE). I would like to respond to the interview so that I can help our readers.

-Thank you very much. First of all, I would like to ask you a personal question. What do you do in your spare time?
When I'm not working, I enjoy pursuing several interests that keep me informed, engaged, and connected.

・Global Awareness
 I actively follow news about current events, particularly in the realms of world politics and climate change. This helps me stay up-to-date on critical issues and understand the interconnectedness of our world.
・Technology Awareness
I am passionate about technology and its constant advancement. I dedicate time to reading about various IT-related developments, innovations, and their impact on the current system.
・Family Time
Spending quality time with my children is a priority. Whenever I have free time, I enjoy taking them for walks in our neighborhood, fostering a sense of connection and enjoying the outdoors together. I also have a small business with my uncle, so this business is also an important time with my family.

-You are very sensitive to information and share it well within the company. What is the reason for your active information gathering?
The current world situation is very interesting because it also affects business. There are many issues that affect the economic situation of our country, such as war, political unrest, and climate change. And these issues affect our personal and professional lives. I am actively gathering information to be prepared for the next change.

-Thank you. You always check not only the global news but also the local news from different media. It's very informative for us. Then tell us about your background.
I started my engineering career while I was studying in university. After completing my graduation from Computer Science and Engineering I moved to Japan to work as a system engineer in a service based IT company in Tokyo. I had a lot of good experiences working as a backend engineer developing various kinds of web applications. After this experience, I moved to the tech giant Rakuten. I worked there for many different departments with different roles and responsibilities. I had the opportunity to contribute to their large scale system which motivated me to pursue my career as a site reliability engineer. I also played the role of an engineering manager as well as system architect during my journey with Rakuten. Moving forward, I envision myself evolving into a pragmatic system architect, capitalizing on my versatile experience in DevOps, SRE, and backend engineering.

・How did you learn about Beatrust?

I would like to thank Beatrust co-founder Masato-san for contacting me on LinkedIn. I really liked the company's vision. I was inspired to apply after learning about Beatrust's global environment and commitment to diversity.  Having worked in Japan for more than 13 years, I feel that Japan has many good companies and products to be successful in global stage. Beatrust is a platform, it is designed to be a global thing and challenge the overseas market. In terms of diversity, the team members, including Beatrust CEO Kunio-san, have a wide range of experience. The main attraction for me was the platform and the mindset of going global.

・Job Responsibilities and Challenges

-As you say, Beatrust has many members with a global perspective, which is a great feature of our company. Could you tell me about your responsibilities?
As an SRE, my primary responsibility is to perform system management tasks such as building and operating the system infrastructure that supports Beatrust. I will use my experience as a cloud/system architect to design, review and improve existing systems running in the cloud. It is my responsibility to conduct kaizen activities and improve system performance, reliability, and security. In addition, I will work to build the necessary pipelines and tools to improve the productivity of the entire development team, as well as build and operate a data analytics platform for product verification. I also work closely with other engineers on various types of backend engineering.

-It is very encouraging that you were active right away. What do you think about our workplace?

Beatrust has a global vision, open communication, flexible and collaborative environment for both engineering and business teams.
In addition to these strengths, I also see opportunities for further improvement:

Maintaining this open and flexible environment while scaling rapidly will be critical. 
・Readiness for global expansion
 As Beatrust expands globally, ensuring cultural sensitivity and understanding the nuances of different markets will be key to success. This could include building diverse teams and fostering cross-cultural collaboration.
Overall, I believe Beatrust has a phenomenal foundation and immense potential. I'm eager to contribute my skills and experience to help meet the challenges of rapid growth while preserving the company's unique culture and commitment to quality.

-What is your specific challenge at Beatrust?
I think we have done  a good job with the design. So I think our challenge is what kind of features we want to offer. We need to develop our strengths and create a new value compared to our competitors. In my opinion, people in Japan are not so interested in openly sharing something related to the workplace, they prefer to communicate in the area of psychological safety. Beatrust helps to create a good open transparent environment. I would like to understand the challenges they face and create more useful situations for them. We need to find something to create more engagement so that user will use it for some reason.To deliver value to the user in Japan, it gives us new insight into global marketing. I will be part of the team and we will work together to develop the product quickly.

Post-interview notes
What struck me in my interview with him was when he said, "I was also a manager in my previous company, but that was also because I felt that management skills were necessary to deliver a better product". He anticipates upcoming changes from many angles and always works ahead of the curve. I am delighted to be working with such a talented and motivated member of our team.
