"What's so great about Julio Iglesias anyway?" 1 -Murakami Asahi-do -Haruki Murakami-

For some reason, there are many women around me-Murakami Asahi-do -Haruki Murakami- o are infatuated with Julio Iglesias. As a man in his thirties and already married, I can't understand what's so appealing about him, but I'm too timid to voice such thoughts. I keep them to myself. I've named these women "Julio Syndrome" patients. One of them is a woman who works as my editor at a certain publishing company. Before being infatuated with Julio, she was a fan of Yves Montand. When Montand came to Japan, she secretly withdrew 20,000 yen from her sick husband's cash card, bought a ticket, and went to the concert alone, shedding tears of emotion, saying, "I don't care about my husband anymore." I was worried that she might end up like that, and as expected, she recently became a fan of Julio Iglesias. "Hey, Murakami-san, do you know Julio's annual income? It's hundreds of billions, and he even owns a private jet and about a dozen villas. He has dozens of lovers all over the world, and he's such an intellectual. Isn't that amazing? Jealous, right?" she says. The difference in our circumstances is too great, and hearing that doesn't make me feel jealous at all. Just trying to remember the names of dozens of lovers from all over the world would be a challenge. Even if I only had one wife, I'd probably blurt out the names of past lovers in my sleep, so I'm on edge about that. Julio must be diligent, I suppose. I heard that if he were to approach her, even she would be in danger. She would become one of Julio's many lovers and receive an allowance of around 50 million yen per year. But since she can't spend 500 million yen in a year, she apparently sends about 10 million yen to her current husband. I'm not sure if this can be called fidelity or not; it's beyond my comprehension as an average husband.
