Kotoba −ことば

「英語話者」と言ってもその背景はさまざま。
英語を母語とするアメリカ・イギリス・カナダ・オーストラリア・ニュージーランドの人々、植民地化など歴史的な背景によって英語が公式の第二言語の、インドやフィリピン、アフリカ諸国の人々、もともとは英語の背景がなく、学校の教育で英語を学び、英語を外国語として話す国の人々、、、

生まれた国も文化も異なり、考え方も全く違う私たちでも唯一共有しあっている英語という言語。それだけたくさんの人から生まれてくる英語は、その分多様に豊かになって良いのだと思います。

言語文化背景が全く異なる人たちが自由に行き交う今、多様な価値観や考え方がある中で、「〜であるべき」という、どこか固定的な観念には、私たちの生活のどこを切り取っても出くわすことがあります。

ことばについても、同じようなことを思いました。

例えば英語も。英語に限らず、日本語でも、他のどの言語でもそうです。
スペルが違うから、語彙の使い方が間違ってるから、文法が正しくないから
「このことばは、良くない、正しくない、綺麗じゃない」

私たちはよく英語やその他の外国語について「自分たちの発音や語彙がへた・少ない」と、『足りない側』に自分たちの身を置くことがあります。でもそれは逆に考えれば、二つ以上の言語を知っているということ。その分私たちは、語彙も発音もちょっと多くレパートリーとして持っているのです。むしろ『足りてる側』なのかもしれません。

「〜であるべき」という言葉の姿から少し解放されて、それは「間違い」ではなく、自分の個性だと考えて、人それぞれ自分のことばで、自由に書いて表現し、互いに感じて、影響される。

恥ずかしくて表には出さなくても皆どこかで、自分を表現したいと思っているもの。言語の形の正しさよりも、誰かに伝えたいという気持ちを大切にして自分を表現することも素敵なことだと思います。

もしも、英語でクリエイティブに書けたら、その自分の考えを、より多くの人に見たり読んだりしてもらえるのは国際的な役割を持つ英語の長所でもあります。

世界の言語のいくつかは、そして特に共通語となった英語は、社会的、経済的、政治的、色々な力を持っています。でも同時に、言語は私たち個人個人の価値観や、考え方、表現の幅を広げてくれるものだと思います。英語や外国語を学ぶことは、遠いことでなく、私たちの心の近くにあるあたたかくて優しいものだと思っています。

多様性を楽しむことや、尊敬しあうこと、
これを言葉という芸術から表現からができたらと思いました。

書く側も、そして読む側も、想像力と創造力を膨らませて、
多様で自由な文章を楽しめますように。

Kotoba is a Japanese noun for “words” or “language”. Kotoba gallery shares creative writings by writers of different lingua-cultural backgrounds who express themselves and write them down in their own “kotoba”.

In the midst of globalization, English is used as an international lingua franca among millions of speakers and writers of different first languages. They choose English for expressive purposes so that they can connect with their friends from all over the world.

I believe that languages are an important medium for self-expression, and such linguistic expression reflects individual and collective cultural identities.
In a transnational context, multilingual English users exploit their diverse linguistic repertoire and flexibly adapt the English language to their own style to express themselves.

English is becoming more fluid and dynamic than we could ever imagine.

Nevertheless, many of us still focus on the “correctness” or the “accuracy” of the English usage and try to conform to “what it should be”, which tends to be the one used by “native” speakers/writers. Writers often hesitate to write for fear of making mistakes. Readers also often overlook the aesthetics or the beauty of a storyline while paying closer attention to how proficient the writing is in terms of its grammar use and sentence structures.

The creative writings on this website, however, are showing us the "accurate" or “correct” maneuvering of the English language. The writings here, instead, are presented as a means of the medium to spread the writers' thoughts, opinions, experiences, and ideas. It is to share what is constructed in the mind of their first languages.

All the writers here are freed from the norms and rules of the English language and the writing genres as well as transcend the idea of “should”. They share the world of their first languages and other languages they represent. These writings will be the door for other readers to encounter the new idea, view, and the world.

Not to mention, languages, or more specifically, English possesses social, economical, and political power in its own right. But I believe English or any language around us also reflects more personal value. It helps us to broaden our perspective and build or even color our individual identities. I hope I can express the value of diversity from the perspective of language and creativity.
