According to the Corporation Statistics Survey released by the Ministry of Finance, domestic companies' ordinary profits from April to June this year reached over 35 trillion yen, the highest quarterly figure ever. This was due to the weak yen boosting profits in the manufacturing industry and the strong performance of the service industry.
The Corporation Statistics Survey is conducted once every three months and targets over 30,000 companies with capital of 10 million yen or more.
Domestic companies' ordinary profits from April to June this year, excluding finance and insurance, reached 35.768 trillion yen, a 13.2% increase from the same period last year and the highest quarterly figure ever.
Of these, the manufacturing industry saw a 13% increase due to the weak yen boosting profits at automobile manufacturers, as well as the increase in orders for parts at semiconductor manufacturers due to the increase in data center construction due to advances in AI technology.
In addition, the non-manufacturing sector saw a 13.3% increase due to the increase in the number of foreign tourists visiting Japan, which led to a boom in service industries such as hotels and restaurants, and the construction industry seeing an increase in orders for large projects.
The total amount of capital investment by companies was 11.9161 trillion yen, up 7.4% from the same period last year.
Of this, the manufacturing sector saw a 1.4% increase due to semiconductor manufacturers strengthening their production systems for parts used in EVs (electric vehicles), and the non-manufacturing sector saw a 10.9% increase due to the opening of new restaurants.
・"Internal reserves" reach record high of over 600 trillion yen
The Corporate Enterprise Statistics Survey also examines the retained earnings that companies have on hand, or so-called "internal reserves."
According to the survey, the "internal reserves" of domestic companies, excluding finance and insurance, were 600.9857 trillion yen last year, up 8.3% from the previous year.
This is the 12th consecutive year that internal reserves have increased, and is the highest ever.
The Ministry of Finance stated, "The increase in retained earnings is believed to be due to favorable corporate performance. We would like to see whether sustained wage increases will lead to the distribution of profits to workers, which will in turn increase consumption and lead to economic growth."

財務省が発表した法人企業統計調査で、ことし4月から6月までの国内の企業の経常利益は、35兆円余りと、四半期ごとの額として過去最高となりました。円安によって製造業の利益が押し上げられたことや、サービス業が好調だったことなどが要因です。
法人企業統計調査は、3か月に1度、資本金1000万円以上の3万社余りを対象に行っています。
ことし4月から6月までの金融と保険を除いた国内の企業の経常利益は、35兆7680億円と、去年の同じ時期に比べて13.2％増え、四半期ごとの額として過去最高となりました。
このうち、製造業は、自動車メーカーで円安を背景に利益が押し上げられたほか、半導体メーカーでAI技術の進展によりデータセンターの建設が増え部品の受注が伸びたことなどから13％増加しました。
また、非製造業は、日本を訪れる外国人旅行者の増加でホテルや飲食店といったサービス業が好調だったほか、建設業では大型案件の受注が進んだことなどから、13.3％増えました。
また、企業の設備投資の総額は11兆9161億円と去年の同じ時期より7.4％増えました。
このうち、製造業は半導体メーカーがEV＝電気自動車などに使われる部品の生産体制を強化したことなどで1.4％増えたほか、非製造業では飲食店の新規出店が進んだことなどから10.9％増えました。
・「内部留保」600兆円超で過去最高
法人企業統計調査では、企業が手元に残している利益剰余金、いわゆる「内部留保」についても調べています。
それによりますと、金融と保険を除いた国内企業の「内部留保」は昨年度600兆9857億円で、前の年度より8.3％増えました。
内部留保が増えるのは12年連続で、過去最高となりました。
財務省は「内部留保の増加は、好調な企業業績が背景にあるとみられる。持続的な賃上げによって、収益が労働者に分配され、消費が伸びることで経済の成長につながるか見ていきたい」としています。
