Rosie Bennet | Guitar on Instagram: "TOXIC MUSIC TEACHERS 💡 Let’s talk - have you ever had a bad experience with a teacher? I feel like so many people have had at least one terrible teacher, and that counts the teachers who weren’t terrible themselves, but who made the learning experience terrible in some way. This Gavotte is so bright and light and pretty, but it always reminds me of a time that felt heavy and toxic. My first teacher was rigid, inconsistent and demanding, I felt like my whole purpose playing guitar was to please him, every performance’s goal to showcase him as an outstanding teacher and equally as importantly to present the guitar as more than a ‘sub standard instrument’ (his words). 🎻 I fell in love with this Loure and Gavotte and learnt it quickly and joyfully in time to play it in intimate setting for a friend and consequently at the memorial service for her late husband. When my teacher found out I had played in ‘public’ without his authorisation he was furious, I remember the energy with which he threw my music at the floor the following class, the rage with which he demanded that I play it for him then if I thought I was good enough to play it in public, how at the first slip in my shaky hands he told me to leave, refusing to teach me. ‘Who do you think you are’ he had asked me as I packed away. At the time this all seemed fairly average, I was in the kind of environment where this sort of thing was normal, returning to my roommate we would have exchanged a ‘how was it?’ ‘eh, he was mad’ *shrug *shrug, but now I’m an adult with students myself I realise it’s not. 🤔 Or perhaps it is ‘normal’ in the music world, but it isn’t good. It doesn’t help you learn anything and it didn’t make him a good teacher, the only consequences perhaps are the years of concerts I refused to advertise because I was scared he’d show up, and the slight sting when I play a piece that brings me back. What has helped is that so many people have similar experiences, a person who made music everything but joyful, and for lots of people that’s the reason they don’t play anymore, but if you’re hanging in there, keep going - things ARE changing. The more we talk the better 🤝 #guitar #guitarist" 6,896 likes, 189 comments - Rosie Bennet | Guitar (@rosiebenn www.instagram.com

Rosie Bennet | Guitar on Instagram: "⭐️ DAY 30! Somehow this piece reminds me of my childhood, growing up in crisp cold winters, with compacted snow melting into spring. The snowdrops and bluebells ravishing the woodland, the trip trap, clip clop of a horse hooves chopping through the wood chippings. Those evening walks that made everywhere around feel as vertical as it did horizontal, those peaceful burned off sunsets over dry fields, lined with bramble. There’s something about church going that is tied in my memory to the experiences I’ve had in nature, that same feeling of innocent reverence. And there’s something that still pulls on my heart thinking of local church choirs, an organist chair frequented by the same bottom for 50 years, there’s something about village life that just doesn’t leave. Even now, though I’m long left, I still occasionally think to light a candle, though they burn differently now, now I know the candle’s construction, and the purpose of the manufacture, oh to be in that awe again of a match held up in front of my shining eyes and reaching up to light a flame that felt like it burned forever. . . . . #jesujoyofmansdesiring #bach #organ #organmusic #jsbach #preludio #prelude #guitarists #guitars" 7,295 likes, 196 comments - Rosie Bennet | Guitar (@rosiebenn www.instagram.com

Rosie Bennet | Guitar on Instagram: "Day 1 of practice after taking a full week’s break! ⭐️ Taking a break as a classical musician is wrought with guilt - it’s like we’ve ingrained in our minds that rest and balance are the opposite of work and dedication. Productivity and creativity, at least for me are inspired and cultivated through a relaxed approach to rest, I don’t regiment myself a day or week off here and there, rather I notice ‘ah, I haven’t practised for a few days’ and it’s taken me years to get to that state. 🦄 Rest can mean many things - physical rest from playing to avoid injury, mental rest to avoid emotional depletion, active conscious rest - consciously removing specific creative stimulus by engaging the mind in other activity, or for me a significant part of my rest cycle, restorative creative rest which might look like planning, designing, collaborating, listening, exploring and generally spending time on things that feel exterior to the preparatory creative experience of my career. Of course all of these things are interlinked and make one whole - me 💁🏻‍♀️ - and while separating these elements is useful to analyse what they mean and how they operate, it’s also more than worth remembering that it is where they connect that matters. 💡 You don’t need to deserve REST! It’s not the antithesis of work, it’s part of a healthy and sustainable work practice 💡 . Rosie Bennet | Guitar on Instagram: "🎸 It’s my BIRTHDAY! ⭐️ feat. the beautiful intro from Hearts and Bones by @paulsimonofficial ! Every birthday (which is actually the 15th, but the celebration starts today 🕶) I sit down with my guitar and muse on the past year, what has changed here in this place I know so well? For years and years changes have happened in my fingers, in my resilience, but this year the theme of freedom shines through. Since talking with Derek Gripper for Fret Not I’ve realised so much about the funny and complicated ways that I’ve restricted myself over the last decades, not just with the guitar but in everything. 💡 It’s been a year of learning and laughing through not defining myself by the things I shouldn’t be, or the things I should be. It hasn’t always been easy, but change is something I’m more and more comfortable in 💕 Here’s 10 things that I’ve done between 25+26 that I’m proud of! ⭐️ Interviewed my heroes (here’s looking at everyone on Fret Not, including you Brian 🎸) and learnt how to stand my ground and elaborate properly ⭐️ Opened up completely and told my life story for @tmdtapodcast ⭐️ Started an actual Dutch course 🇧🇪 ⭐️ Finally finally took new pictures! Thanks to Evi Clerkx! ⭐️ Learnt that the answer to ‘play a song for us then!’ is actually to just play a song (learnt a song) ⭐️ Finally read War and Peace in its entirety without skipping 💁🏻‍♀️ ⭐️ Moved house! Got an office! Got a printer! ⭐️ Started 2 new jobs! ⭐️ Brought an actual plant to life (green fingers after all) ⭐️ Reached 100k on here (122k now!) and that’s on YOU! Thank you for being here, for listening to me rant and rave for the last 3 years. Here’s to the next 3! 🙌 . . . #heartsandbones #paulsimon #simonandgarfunkel #acousticcover #acousticguitar #pickariff #riffwars #guitaristsunite" 15K likes, 660 comments - Rosie Bennet | Guitar (@rosiebennet www.instagram.com

Rosie Bennet | Guitar on Instagram: "⭐️ Lagrima - Francisco Tarrega 🇪🇸 ⭐️ ‘Tirelessly lulled by the sea, those happy, lush and fertile fields of the Levant have always been a blessing from god. It is a garden spot filled with fruits and flowers, full of bright dreams and deep-rooted loves, a rich, natural treasure of ancient glorious Spain. 🌊 The breeze from the sea wafts to the mountains shaking the luxuriant orange groves, whose murmuring carry the echo of far-away songs of passion and war with accents of nostalgia, pain and death. ⛰ On the small hill that rises in the middle of the plain, on the same spot where the conquistador king established his war tent, the city of Burriana was founded. In 1237 after his victory he had a sumptuous palace built for his children’s solace, as well as a chapel. The Christian town was named Villarreal de los Infantes. ☀️ There, until the revolution of 1936, laid the body of St.Pascual Bailon, it’s pastor, in whose spiritual lap gathered countless numbers of the faithful. At an angle perpendicular to this building, forming with it a tiny triangular plaza with a lovely garden, you can see a humble little white house with a marble tablet bearing a bust on its facade. On one side of the bust is the crest of Villarreal and on the other there is a guitar. “In this house was born on November 21 1852, for the honour and glory of Villarreal, the eminent guitarist and composer Don Francisco Tarrega y Eixea.”’ 🎸 @seanstshibe - for you, with a beautiful text by Pujol translated by Jessica Burns 🙏 . . . #tàrrega #franciscotarrega #lagrima #guitarra #spanishguitar #guitarraespañola #prelude" 10K likes, 202 comments - Rosie Bennet | Guitar (@rosiebennet www.instagram.com

Rosie Bennet | Guitar on Instagram: "⭐️ Chopin Nocturne no.2 opus 9, arranged (of course) by Tarrega! ❤️ In this video I combined two things I love - sight reading and the wisdom of a Fret Not guest! What an amazing episode with @tariqharbmusic - delightful human and musician, prep your ears for laughter and inspiration in this episode. 🌈 I certainly learnt a hell of a lot from Tariq’s explanation of presence in the face of perfection. . I hope you’re well and that you enjoy this little piece of absolute heaven, and of course sorry for the distortion - I need both a new camera and mic for recording really, any suggestions welcome!! ❤️ . . . . . #chopin #chopinnocturne #nocturne #piano #pianocover #tarrega #romanticmusic" 13K likes, 238 comments - Rosie Bennet | Guitar (@rosiebennet www.instagram.com

Rosie Bennet | Guitar on Instagram: "⭐️ Dedicatoria - Granados (1867-1916) 🇪🇸 ⭐️ This piece was one of my first loves which I got to hear along with the Cancion y Danza by Ruiz-Pipo on Vladimir Mikulka’s iconic Iberoamerican Guitar CD. Him craning his neck forward in the graniest sepia-tone image takes me right back to those hours in front of the CD player prancing about the living room with eyes closed and a hand on my 8 year old chest dancing a dramatic solo full of the love I had seen in Disney movies. 🌺 . Sometimes finding out that a piece wasn’t written for guitar, or discovering the real history of a composer can ruin an experience. ☀️ Lately I’ve been marvelling at the power of programme notes, how they can make or break your story, how reality can intercept imagination. . I’d rather imagine this music as I heard it first, a short and sweet love song sung by an individual with a capricious heart, one that loves frequently but fully. 🤷🏻‍♀️ How else do you explain it’s length 😅 . Hope you had a wonderful weekend! . . . . #granados #tarrega #granada #dedicatoria #piano #klavier #clavier #klavierspielen #pianomusic #pianist #guitarist #gitar #guitarra" 13K likes, 254 comments - Rosie Bennet | Guitar (@rosiebennet www.instagram.com

It’s been so long since we’ve talked and I’ve missed you. ⭐️ Between Christmas, new year and those x10 speed weeks of January, I’ve ended up spending the last few months accidentally social media free, but I’ve got plenty to tell you! So let’s catch up first, how are you? What have you been up to? Anything that you’ve been particularly proud of at the start of this year? ✨ Excuse my stank faces - this video was taken as an attempt to figure out what my right hand is doing that can be cleaned up, suggestions also more than welcome, I’m starting up the technique 🔥 for this year anyone with me? . . #bach #cello #violoncello #violoncelle #preludio #dmajor #ギター" 2,388 likes, 74 comments - rosiebennetguitar on February 14, www.instagram.com
