About “The Scene of the Angels” by Kenji Ozawa／「天使たちのシーン」小沢健二　について僕が感じるいくつかのこと

“The Scene of the Angels” is sung by Kenji Ozawa. This song is included in his first album called “The Dogs Bark, But The Caravan Moves On” released in 1993. This is a quite long song as 13 minutes 37 seconds. I met this song as a insert song of a film called “We Couldn’t Become Adults”(2021) on Netflix.

小沢健二の曲、“天使たちのシーン“は1993年に発売された彼の1stアルバム『犬は吠えるがキャラバンは進む』に収録された13分37秒にも及ぶ大曲。僕はこの曲を昨年Netflixで配信された『ボクたちはみんな大人になれなかった』という映画の中で知った。

While I listen to this song, I feel like people can love any feelings even it’s depression. This is a kind of anthem about our boring daily life that sometimes makes me totally disappointed. This song also reminds me that our daily life include life and death. I wonder why we live, sometimes give a birth, and finally pass away in same way.  This song makes me think about such things.

人は憂鬱すら愛せる、僕はこの曲を聴いてそう思う。僕らの時にどうしようもなく平凡な日常のアンセムとしてこの曲は存在する。この曲は日常には生と死が含まれることも同時に思い出させる。僕たちは何のために生き、時に誰かを産み落とし、そしてなぜ最後はみんな同じように天に召されるのだろうか。この曲は僕にそんなことを考えさせる。

Somehow I am attracted strongly by some words like sweet, holy, ecstacy and forever. While I try to make myself meaningful in this society, I can't trust anything physical to assure me that my effort would bear fruit someday. So, I try to trust such abstract and fascinating words. Words to me may be God to someone else. It may be a modest jinx or daily routine.

僕はどういうわけか甘美とか、神秘とか、恍惚とか、永遠とかいう言葉にめっぽう弱い。日夜あくせく自分をこの社会にとって何か意味のあるものたらしめようとしている一方で、この辛さはいつの日か実を結ぶんだ！ということを保証する形あるものが手元にないから、こういった荒唐無稽で到底自分の力の及ばぬ言葉を信じようとしてしまうんだ。それは他の誰かにとっては神かもしれない。ささやかなジンクスやルーティンだって構わないだろう。

What is love? If the word of “love” weren’t  in the world and we never knew the concept, would we not be able to feel love?  Probably, the answer is “No”. Our hearts are moved from time to time. Just like when you are listening to this song.

愛ってなんだろうか。愛という言葉が存在せず、僕たちが愛の概念を持たなければ、僕たちは愛を感じられ無かっただろうか？答えは多分ノーだ。折に触れて僕たちの心は動くんだ。ちょうどこの曲を聴いているときみたいに。
