#5 The Ray

アメリカから戻ってきて、コロナで戻れなくなって云々、という話は何度も書いてきたことだが、この「The Ray」について書くときもまたその話になってしまうがお許しを。

一時帰国で日本に滞在していた間、知人のご好意でマンションを借りて滞在していた。ほんのひと月ほどのはずが、コロナが初めて現れ、どうもおかしなことになってきたねえ、と話していたら滞在が二ヶ月になり三ヶ月になり・・どうもこれは長くなりそうだぞ、という時に作ったのがこのビデオだ。
何かしたい創りたいと思っていた時、この素敵な家を拝見させていただいた。ここでビデオを撮ったら面白いんじゃないか、と思って聞いてみると自由に使ってよいと言っていただいたので早速制作の計画を立て始めた。

曲はアメリカで録音したアルバム『GATE』の「The Ray」。
イントロのギターはRinkoによるものだが、なんのコードなのかよくわからない。本人もわからないそうだ。
とても自分達らしい曲だと思っている。曲を作っていた時のことはあまり覚えていないが、アレンジも仕上げもすぐにできたような記憶がある。初めに曲を聴いた時から曲に導かれてあっという間に完成した。アメリカで制作した仕上がりもヘビーでとても気に入っている。

さてビデオ制作である。ビデオカメラも何もない中、カメラをレンタルしたり知人に貸してもらったりして撮影をした。当たり前だがDIYだ。DIYが素晴らしいとか過度に価値をおいているわけではない。作りたいものを理想通りに完成させる良い環境があるのならDIYにこだわる必要もないだろう。スタイルとしてのDIYはダサいだけだし、自己満足に陥るだけだ。DIYは必然性から生まれる時にのみ意味をもつ。やりたいことがある。作りたいものがある。他に方法がない。だからDIYでやる。そういうシンプルさが大切だと思う。
面白くクオリティが高いものを作りたかった。時間だけはたくさんあったので、カメラでいろいろな撮り方を試したり画角を考えたり光の当て方で画がどうかわるか試したりとか、きちんと学んだわけでもない三人がああだこうだと試行錯誤して完成させた。

ビデオの最後には、"The Watabe Family"に向けての謝辞を載せさせていただいた。本当に感謝しています。
このビデオを見るたびに、世界が大混乱だった初期のパンデミックのことや、全く先が見えない中で創作を選んだ自分達の状況、たくさんの人たちに助けてもらったことなどを思い出す。嬉しいことにビデオにもたくさんのコメントをもらっている。創作を通じて多くの人々と繋がることができる幸福を感じている。

I have written many times about how I came back from the U.S. and couldn't go back because of Covid, and so on, and I hope you will forgive me if I go back to that again when I write about "The Ray" here.

While we were in Japan for a furlough, a friend of mine kindly rented an apartment for us to stay in. It was only supposed to be for a month or so, but Covid started to expand, and we were talking about how strange things were getting, and then our stay turned into two months, and then three months, and then... well, it seemed like it was going to be a long time. We were looking for something to do, something to create, when we saw this beautiful house. We thought it would be interesting to make a video here, and when we asked, we were told that we could use it freely, so we immediately started planning the production.

The song is "The Ray" from the album "GATE" recorded in the US. The intro guitar is by Rinko, but I don't know what the chords are. Even she doesn't know what the chord is. We think it is a song that is very typical of us. I don't remember much when we were creating the song, but I seem to remember that the arrangement and finishing touches were done quickly. From the first time I heard the song, we were led by the music and it was completed in no time. The finished product produced in the U.S. was also heavy and I like it very much. Now for the video production. With no video camera or anything else, we rented a camera or asked an acquaintance to lend one to us to shoot the video. It was DIY, of course. I am not saying that DIY is great or that DIY is overly valuable. If you have a good environment to create what you want to create in an ideal way, there is no need to be concerned about DIY. DIY as a style is just lame and leads to complacency. There is something you want to do. I want to create something. There is no other way. That's why I do DIY. I think that kind of simplicity is important.
We wanted to create something interesting and of high quality. We had a lot of time, so we tried different ways of shooting with the camera, different angles of view, different lighting, etc. The three of us, who had not studied the subject properly, went through a lot of trial and error to complete the video.

At the end of the video, we included an acknowledgment to "The Watabe Family. Thank you so much. Every time I watch this video, I think back to the early pandemics when the world was in turmoil, to our situation when we chose to create with no clear vision of what was to come, and to the many people who helped us. I am happy to say that I have received many comments on the video. I feel happy to be able to connect with so many people through creation.
