ZINEを通して香港を眺めてみる。　/　　A view at Hong Kong through a zine.

いつもお世話になっているCREVASSEさんからのお誘いで、香港から新作が届くのでZINEをみていないか？というお誘いを頂いた。
I was invited by CREVASSE, who has always been a good friend of mine, to view at their zine since they have a new one coming from Hong Kong. I got an invitation from CREVASSE.

■”よりよき”をなんとなく眺めて言葉にしていく　/　we veiw at "better" and put it into words.

眺めるとタイトルをつけてみたが、ある種のcriticであると考える。
あえて翻訳すると、critique = 批評　である。
I titled it "veiwing," but I think of it as a kind of critique.
If I dare to translate it, it is critique = 批評 in japanese.

批評の目的は、よりよきものとは何かを不断に模索する。
その方法は、無機質にただ並べてみるだけ。
The purpose of criticism is to tirelessly search for what is better.
The way to do this is to simply arrange them in an inorganic way.

日本で批評・講評とかいうと(ある一定の答えがある前提で)堅苦しいし、ある種のヒエラルキーを感じる審査に近いが、英語のcritic のニュアンスは少し違う。
In Japan, critiques are more formal (assuming there is a certain answer) and more like judging where you feel a certain hierarchy, but the nuance of critique in English is a little different.

よりよきものを模索する方法の違い
方法1　弱みを補う　→ダメなところを徹底的に叩き鍛える。
方法2　強みを伸ばす　→よいところから立ち上がる可能性を想像する
Different ways to seek for better things
Method 1: Compensate for weaknesses
 　　　　　→ Thoroughly beat and train the weak points.
Method 2: Develop strengths
　　　　　 → Imagine the possibilities of rising from the good.

我々がずっとしたいことは、英語での　critique　=　方法2　であり、そこに立ち上がる作品の”よりよき”をなんとなく眺めて言葉にしていく。作品を提出されたときは他人のもであっても、眺めることで自分のものとして、なにかを獲得していく作業かもしれない。
What we have always wanted to do is method 2, and somehow view at and put into words the "better" of the work that rises up there. Even if the work is someone else's at the time it is submitted, by veiwing at it, we may acquire something that makes it our own.

■きになるやつ/Interesting work

前後の文脈を無視して切り刻み、意図せずして繰り返される という手つきに共感する。分解して再構築すること　と　反復。一枚の紙からできているという構造も惹かれる。もしページ構成を変えられるとしたら、作品のコンセプトと構造が一致しておりとてもうつくしいものといえる。
I sympathize with the hand of chopping and unintentional repetition, ignoring the context of the preceding and following. Deconstructing and reconstructing, and repetition. I am also attracted to the structure of the work, which is made of a single sheet of paper. 
If the page structure could be changed, it would be a very beautiful thing, as it matches the concept and structure of the work.


これも一枚でできている構造の本。変形するという意味では上の作品との共通点
This is another book with a structure made of a single piece. In the sense that it transforms, it has something in common with the work above.


完全に作品のカタチから入るパターンのやつ。作品の内容がわからないけどシンプルにそこに在る　ということを教えてくれそうな作品
This is the kind of work where you enter completely from the shape of the work. I don't know what the work is about, but it seems to tell us that it is simply there.


CREVASSEに似たような見た目の作品があってそれと間違えそうな感じ。表紙というよりは中身で昼寝の雰囲気とか空気を感じる。見た目がちいさそうなので大きいバージョンもみてみたい。
There's a similar looking work on CREVASSE that you might mistake for it. Rather than the cover, I can feel the atmosphere of napping and the air inside. I'd like to see a larger version of this book, since it looks so small.


■一度眺めてみて、みえてきたこと。/I took a veiw at it once, and it became clear to me.

香港がどんな場所か・作家がどんな世界に生きてるかがわからないけど、それがカタチになった作品が届くことで、そこにある空気や感覚を想像することができる。近年の香港の状況をみていると、自由という言葉のもとにあるARTsの原点を考えさせられる。
I don't know what kind of place Hong Kong is or what kind of world the artists are living in, but I can imagine the atmosphere and feeling there by receiving their works in the form of it. The recent situation in Hong Kong makes me think about the origin of ARTs, which is based on the word "freedom.

変形する作品は、決められた秩序に対する自由に向かう反抗として映る。
時間の流れを無視してシンプルに存在を示すものは、より強い意思みたいものを想像できる。
ある作品では、写真にうつる匂いみたいな感覚　を感じた。それが香港そのものかわからないけど、香港から来たものには違いない。
Transforming works of art can be seen as a rebellion towards freedom against a predetermined order.
Works that ignore the flow of time and simply show their existence can be imagined as a stronger will.
In one of the works, I felt a sense of smell in the photograph. I don't know if it was Hong Kong itself, but it must have come from Hong Kong.

日本人が日本語のOSを使うのと同じように、香港には香港のOSがある。
(ちなみに、海外という言葉が聞こえてくるが、海外というOSはない。）
ZINEが海を渡ることで我々が海外に行かなくても、多様なOSが世界にはあるよ　を経験できたのがとてもよかった。
Just as Japanese people use a Japanese operating system, Hong Kong has a Hong Kong operating system.
(By the way, there is no OS called "overseas," although the word "overseas" is heard.
It was great to experience that there are various operating systems in the world even if we don't go abroad by crossing the sea with zines.
