ワーケーション体験談③ 大学生・ 直さんの場合

《滞在の理由》

大学の授業、インターン、アルバイトの全てがリモートでできるようになったため、ずっと住みたいと思っていた屋久島に住んでみよう！と思い立ち、その日に飛行機のチケットとサウスビレッジの部屋を予約しました。

《サウスビレッジを選んだ理由》

目的が「旅行」ではなく「暮らし」だったため、サウスビレッジを選びました。
数日間の観光地巡りならば、空港や港に近いエリアが最適かもしれませんが、観光ではなくその土地の人や文化、自然、暮らしをじっくり味わいたいと感じる人にとってはここが理想的な滞在先だと思います。実際、サウスビレッジがある平内というエリアは観光業に染まりきっていないようなところで、気候も人も温かく、自然も豊かで住み心地の良いところでした。
サウスビレッジは、近くに散歩コースがあったり、毎日スタッフの方が清掃をしてくださるため清潔だったり、共用エリアやイベントで沢山の人とお話できたりと、とても楽しく快適に過ごせる場所でした。

《屋久島での生活》

屋久島・サウスビレッジでの生活は、理想そのものでした。
朝は鳥の鳴き声で目覚め、海岸まで散歩をし、朝日に照らされた海を見て感動して宿へ帰り、ちゃちゃっと仕事を終わらせ、共用のキッチンで他のゲストさんとお話しながらお昼ごはんを作り、午後はゲストハウスにある本棚の本を読み漁り、夜は満点の星空を見て檜風呂に入って寝る。というのが、何も用事がない日の過ごし方でした。
休日は、バスの一日券を買って、西の方にある大川の滝を見に行ったり、少し足を伸ばして永田のいなか浜で1人泳いだり(10月下旬)、バスクチーズケーキが美味しいカフェで作業したり、新八野釜で陶芸体験をしてみたり。
仕事や授業に追われる日も、仲良くしてくれるスタッフさんやゲストに仕事について意見をもらったり、あと30分作業したら近くの森まで散歩してリフレッシュしよう！とオンオフ切り替えて仕事ができました。

宮之浦の方にあるユースホステルにも宿泊させていただきました。テラスからは日の出も海も綺麗に見れました！

とても親切に、色々なところに連れて行っていただきました。「若い世代にはどんどんやりたいことをやってほしいよね」と話されていたのが印象的です。

Workation at Yakushima, South Village(by a college student: Nao)

《Initial motive》

As everything including school lectures and internship were shifted to online work, I had no reason to live in Tokyo. Yakushima was a place I’ve always wanted to live, not just travel, and with no hesitation, I chose to take this fortunate opportunity and booked a flight to Yakushima and a room in South Village.

《Why South Village?》

The main reason why I chose to stay in South Village, is because I wanted to experience “living” in Yakushima, instead of “traveling”.
If you are visiting Yakushima only for a few days, areas near the airport/harbor may be the best option considering the convenience, yet if you are here to live and learn about the people, culture, area, and the life of the locals, South Village is the best choice. Hirauchi, where South Village is located, is an area that is not as commercialized as other areas, with warm climate and people.
South Village has a nice walking trails nearby, is kept clean with regular cleaning everyday, with lots of opportunity to socialize and get to know people.. making it a perfect place to stay.

《Overall》

Life in Yakushima, Hirauchi(the district where South Village is located).. was like being casted as a main character for a Ghibli movie. Everyday you wake up with the birds chirping, you drink water straight from the tap, and you’re off to explore the island.
South Village is spacious, with lots of places to read, work, or nap, and also has many intriguing sites close by. The coast is one of the must-visits, being hit by the waterfall(many Japanese do this–they are mimicking the ascetic practices done by monks) is a must-do activity, and saying hello to the locals and having casual conversations was a priceless experience.
