1945年、ブルックリン・ドジャースの会長ブランチ・リッキーはロビンソンをスカウトする。会談中、リッキーはロビンソンに差別を受けた時に「やられても、やり返すな」と伝える。反駁するロビンソンを諭すリッキーの言葉から引用。

それで初めて、周囲に打ち勝つことができるのだ、と諭すのだ。

ロビンソンはリッキーの期待に答えて活躍する。
活躍すればするほど、周囲の圧力が高まる。
ロビンソン本人はおろか、チームメイトにまで球場使用拒否、宿泊拒否がなされる。試合となれば、なればで、アラン・テュディック演じる口の悪い白人野球選手が、あらん限りのヘイトをロビンソンに打ちまける。
とどめは南部の街の球場、ここは客全員が敵。大人から子供へ受け継がれる（いや感染する）、差別の構図が、ワンカットで鮮烈に示される。
ロビンソンは、そしてチームメイトたちは、対立を乗り越え、一丸となってこの困難へとぶつかっていく。

ロビンソン以降、他のメジャーリーグ球団もニグロリーグの選手を引き抜いていくようになり、結果としてニグロリーグは消滅。今やメジャーリーグは黒人だけでなく全世界から選手を幅広く呼び集めるようになった。
野球の可能性を切り開いた先人たちの姿に心震わされる、野球映画の傑作だ。
