Wanna watch Hamilton? Head to West End!

先日、人気のミュージカル「ハミルトン」を見た。

ロンドンに来てからウエスト・エンドの魅力にハマって色々観てきたけど、これはラップのミュージカルということで聞き取れないかもと思って行ったら、案の定３割くらいしかわからず（後であらすじをたどったら）色々盛大に誤解しながら見通した。

にもかかわらず！音楽とダンスがとにかく格好良くて、脇役まで鳥肌が立つような力量のある役者が揃っていて、結果として、もう一度見たいミュージカルTOP3に入る良さだった。

私は舞台の手前のかぶりつきの席が好きだ。全体を俯瞰しにくいので割安なのに、役者の細かい表情や息遣い、タップの振動、スモークの香りまで伝わってくる。オーケストラピットも近いので、空いていたらまず最前列で見る。今回は前から２列目の席で、値段は£75だった。

日本円にすると15,000円越えだけど、為替の変動を考えていると暮らせないのでその通貨の中で暮らす者の肌感覚としては7,500円と思って欲しい

しかし、そのことを日本にいる友達に話したら、ニューヨークに行った時に同作品を見ようとしたらチケットが平均10万円超えだから躊躇って見逃したと言うので驚いた。送ってもらった記事を見たら、確かに、初期キャストの最終公演はスーパー・ボウル並みに値が吊り上がっていたらしい。

とはいっても、もう10年くらい続いている公演だし、さすがに今は落ち着いてんじゃないのと思って、ブロードウェイの劇場のサイトをチェックしたら、私がとったのと同等の席が、予約手数料も込みで、$ 769.95 だった。ニューヨーク、こわ！

これも為替を考えるのはトリッキーなんだけど、ロンドンの価格との比較のために日本円換算すると12万円ね！友だちの話はほんとだった。

アメリカ建国の話だからアメリカで特に人気なのは納得できるけど、ウエストエンドの役者も皆上手なので、公演の質は遜色ないと思う。だから、ロンドンに来てなにか見るなら、「ハミルトン」めっちゃお得よ、という話。

とはいえ日本からはいずれも遠い。曲だけであればサウンドトラックがYoutubeに上がっている。血が湧くような感動はないと思うけど、他にないミュージカルという雰囲気は伝わるかも。

なお、演出を手がけたリン＝マニュエル・ミランダ氏は、あの「モアナと伝説の海」の主題歌を手がけた人らしい。あの曲もかっこいいよね。

I watched "Hamilton", the hot ticket musical.

Since I came to London, I've been fascinated by the West End and have seen many shows there. However, "Hamilton" is a rap musical, so I worried that I might not be able to understand it.

Indeed, I watched through it with a lot of misunderstandings! Nevertheless, the songs and dances were just so fantastic, and all the actors, even in the supporting roles, were so powerful that they gave me goosebumps.

As a result, it is a must-watch, and I would love to see it again.

My favourite seats are in the front row of the stage. They are usually less expensive because of the difficulty of getting a bird's eye view of the whole show. However, you can feel the actors' detailed expressions, breathing, vibrations of taps, and even the scent of smoke. The orchestra pit is also close by. This time, again, I was seated in the second row from the front. The price was £75. Officially: ¥15,000. Please note that it feels more like ¥7,500 for those living in the pond world. These forex swings have battered my poor wallet, so I have selectively ignored them recently.

However, my friend told me she gave up watching the show in New York because the average ticket price there was over 100,000 yen! The article she sent me shows that the price got to be as high as the Super Bowl for the final performance by the original cast.

Sceptical, I checked the Broadway theatre's website and found that a ticket for a seat equivalent to the one I took costs $769.95, including the reservation fee—horrible New York!

This is also a bit odd considering the exchange rate, but if I convert it to Japanese yen for comparison with the price in London, it is 120,000 yen! My friend's story was true.

Well, it is the story of the founding of the United States of America. Hence, it makes sense that it is viral in the U.S., but the quality of the West End performances is competitive enough.

For my friends in Japan, I found the full soundtrack available on YouTube. You can't expect the blood-boiling impressiveness of a live musical, but it might give you some atmosphere of the unique show.

The director, Lin-Manuel Miranda, is the same person who wrote the theme song for "Moana and the Legend of the Sea". That song is also excellent.

Anyway, the conclusion is that if you come to London to watch a show, "Hamilton" is an excellent deal.
