The reason that DeFi will change the world is because it’s composable. Yes, the decentralization of all things money will (ultimately) create a fairer, faster, and more efficient financial system, enabling a truly global and unchained world economy. Yet the reason DeFi can do both of these things so fast, and do them so well, is its composability.

What is DeFi Composability?

In DeFi, composability means every protocol (which you can imagine as an app, service, game, on-chain institution, etc.) can read and feed directly off the data and value produced by another one, with no permissions needed. They can use one another’s code and financial instruments to build their own or combine the services of two protocols to offer a third service — all to the mutual benefit of everyone involved. The key here is efficiency. DeFi uses blockchain technology to capture latent inefficiencies in capital markets.

Why Composability is Hard in Web2 Markets

In TradFi, this doesn’t happen. Each institution seeks to exploit inefficiencies in global markets for its own gain. They innovate slowly, and melding financial instruments is a legally complex task, the exclusive domain of hyper-connected hedge fund managers and investment arms. In DeFi, a protocol that creates new efficiencies and value-accrual rewards everyone — not just those invested in it, but the entire ecosystem as a whole.

In Web2, you must rely on an intermediary to pay for your AirBnB, because they have achieved composability. This is at the price of harvesting your user data, collecting fees, and a long protracted series of drawn-out negotiations between the companies.
