東大入試で学ぶ英文解釈(1)

　東大の入試問題を使って，英文を読むとはどういう営みなのか，正確に英文を読むためにはどのような力が必要なのかということを考えていきます。東大受験の人も，東大以外を受験する人も，もう一度英語をやり直してみたいという人にも有用な内容にしていきたいと思います。

　これはとても有名な問題なので，見たことがある人も多いかもしれません。1989年に東京大学で出題されたものです。

     ①Some people are so changed by their life's experience that in old age they behave in completely unexpected ways. ②Many of us know elderly men and women who no longer act as we have come to expect them to act. ③I am not talking here about victims of senile dementia*. ④In the example I am talking of the person continues to behave in what most people would agree is a normal manner, but one so remote from his old self that he appears, to those who know him, to be someone else entirely.
