Miss Weller 〔ピアノの教師〕がいらっしゃった。

しゅくだいがあり、 Mrs Zimmel 〔家庭教師〕にも
いかなければならなかったので、たいへんだった。

しゅくだいの作文で Princess Sumi's Husband というお話をかいた。

Miss Weller も Mrs Zimmel もドイツ語系の姓だが、
Miss Weller は米国籍でウィーンのコンセルヴァトワールの留学生だった。
ドイツ・オーストリア系アメリカ人の子孫だったと思う。
当時の私はピアノのレッスンはすべて英語で受けていた。

Mrs Zimmel はアイルランド生まれだったがウィーンの男性と結婚し、
のちに未亡人となってから英語教師をなさっていた当時60代の女性。

宿題は学校からの Homework で、Composition と言う科目だった。
当時の担任 Miss Rowland は、生徒がイマジネーションを広げて好きに書けるように、ほぼ毎週自由題の story を書かせた。

今から思えば、そこに垣間見える性格や心理や友人関係、
親子関係までをもさぐるには最適な課題だったのかもしれない。

手元に残っている Composition というタイトルの notebook から引用する。
11歳の私の英語の作文である。

Princess Sumi's Husband

I am a Princess who live in a very large land in the middle of Europe.

My father is a very famous, powerful King, and everyone call him,
His Majesty King George.

He has three thousand wives, five thousand, four hundred and sixty-two daughters, only one son, many knights and all other servants.

I am the youngest daughter, and now I am sixteen years old.
My brother who is the King's eldest child will have his eighteenth birthday in winter.

Now, I am looking at a knight from my marble-and-golden window behind a silk curtain. He is one of the King's Knights. He is a young knight whom I am in love.

He is the best of all the King's Knights, and wears white velvet clothes and a purple silk cloak. He is very handsome. However, we were not allowed to talk to each other, for I am a princess and he is only a knight.

He is walking in the garden now.
