Japan likely to extend COVID-19 state of emergency

The Japanese government is considering extending its state of emergency around the country's two major urban centers. The measure is currently due to expire this coming Sunday. Officials say they will make a decision on Tuesday after hearing from experts. More than three weeks have passed since the state of emergency was declared in the capital and three neighboring prefectures. The measure was later extended to include Osaka and six other prefectures. Officials are considering extending the declaration in Tokyo, Saitama, Chiba, Kanagawa and parts of the Kansai region, where Osaka is located. The number of new cases reported over the last week is down in these areas compared to a week earlier. In Tokyo, 393 new cases were confirmed on Monday. The daily tally fell below 400 for the first time since late December. Across Japan, officials confirmed 2,673 new cases on Sunday, and 65 deaths. Japan has now reported more than 390,000 infections since the pandemic began. Over 5,700 people have died.
