Understand your personality and live your own life!　（自分の個性を知り、自分の人生を生きよう！）

I have met a lot of people who lived their own life in Japan and overseas.
I love people watching and listening to them, and I found that all people I've met who had their own life understand their irreplaceable personality.
In this post,  I would like to introduce one example of young girl to explain why self-understanding is important.

私は日本でも海外でも、自分の人生を生きているたくさんの人に出会ってきました。
そんな人を見たり聞いたりするのが大好きなのですが、これまで出会った自分の人生を持っている人は皆、自分のかけがえのない個性を理解していることに気づきました。
今回は、若い少女の事例を1つ紹介し、なぜ自己理解が大切なのかを説明したいと思います。

■　A girl in Cambodia

When I was 25, I visited Siem Reap, a city in Cambodia for three days for sightseeing. There were a lot of attractive spots to visit, such as Angkor Wat, Pub Street, and Angkor Hospital for Children. It was fortunate that I met a self-fulfilled young girl at one of the restaurants in Pub Street.

On the second night, I walked to Pub Street to enjoy Khmer meals. This night was the last one in this travelling, so I wanted to enjoy Khmer meals in Pub Street.

Many restaurants attracted me, which made me difficult to choose one.
While comparing restaurants, I found that one restaurant offered a variety of delicious Khmer meals for foreign people.

"This may be a good idea!"

So I decided to enter the restaurant and had a seat.

After having the seat, the girl took charge of me. I found her enjoying her work from the buttom of her heart.
For example, she kindly brought chopsticks to me maybe because she found me a Japanese. Moreover, when she took my plates away, she gently asked me "Were delicious?"

As one of the students of the jikorikai-program, I really want to ask her what she want to do. After the check, I simply asked the following question to her.

"What's the purpuse you work here?"

After only ONE second thinking without puzzled facial expression, she answered simply as following:

"Actually, I work for salary, but I want to communicate with Japanese and American people."

She gave me the strongest impression in my life.

I was really really surprised that she told me not only what she needed but also what she wanted to do without any waste! I never forget how I felt at that time. Also, I really want to increase the number of people who can answer their purposes to work soon after they are asked in English.

■　The importance of self-understanding

I strongly believe that self-understanding is extremely important because the key to a happy life is to make the most of your personality. Personality is composed of the three things: values, talents, and interests. Values give you purpose in your life and work. Talents are the things you are good at doing. Interests are what you like. These three elements are all irreplaceable treasure to you and help you unleash your true self.

■　カンボジアにいた少女

25歳のとき、カンボジアの都市シェムリアップを3日間観光しました。アンコールワット、パブストリート、アンコール小児病院など、魅力的なスポットがたくさんありました。パブストリートのレストランで、自分らしく生きている若い少女に出会ったのは幸運でした。

2日目の夜は、クメール料理を楽しむためにパブストリートまで歩きました。この夜は、この旅の最後の夜だったので、パブストリートでクメール料理を楽しみたかったのです。

たくさんのレストランが魅力的で、どれにするか迷いました。レストランを比較しているうちに、あるレストランが外国人向けにさまざまなおいしいクメール料理を提供しているのを見つけました。

「このレストランはいいかもしれない！」

そこで私はレストランに入り、席に着くことにしました。
席に着くと、その女性が私の担当になりました。

彼女は心から仕事を楽しんでいるのが分かりました。
例えば、私が日本人だと分かったからか、彼女は親切に箸を持ってきてくれました。さらに、私のお皿を片付けるとき、彼女は優しく「おいしかった？」と聞いてくれました。

自己理解プログラムの生徒の一人として、私は彼女に何がしたいのかを本当に聞きたいと思いました。
会計後、私は彼女に次のように質問しました。

「ここで働く目的は何ですか？」

彼女は困惑した表情を浮かべずにほんの1秒考えた後、次のようにシンプルに答えました。

「実は私は給料のために働いているのですが、日本人やアメリカ人とコミュニケーションを取りたいのです。」

彼女は私に人生で最も強い印象を残しました。
彼女が私に必要なものだけでなく、やりたいことも無駄なく教えてくれたことに本当に本当に驚きました！その時の気持ちは決して忘れません。
また、英語で自分の働く目的を聞かれたらすぐに答えられる人を本当に増やしたいです。

■　自分を知ることの大切さ

幸せな人生を送る鍵は、自分の個性を最大限に生かすことだと私は強く信じています。
個性は、価値観、才能、興味の3つから成り立っています。価値観は、人生や仕事に目的を与えます。才能は、得意なこと。興味は、好きなことです。
これら3つの要素は、すべてあなたにとってかけがえのない宝物であり、本当の自分を解き放つのに役立ちます。
