駿府には家康公の威光をかけ、進んだ都市計画がなされました。その生きた遺構が「町割り」です。今でも静岡市民は江戸時代の町割りの上に生活しているのが駿府鳥瞰図を見るとよくわかります。静岡市葵区呉服町の札ノ辻交差点、札ノ辻ビルに掲げられている駿府鳥瞰図を見てみましょう。

Second, the map tells us one of the most characteristic points as the city designed by Lord Ieyasu.
第2にその地図は家康公により設計されたこの街として最も特徴的な点の一つを示しています。
It is ‘machiwari’, which literally means the division of towns and streets.
それは「町割り」です。文字通り、町や通りを分けるという意味です。
The commoners' areas in Sumpu were subdivided into 100 sqm blocks.
駿府における庶民の地域は100メートル四方に区分けされました。
Nowadays, the block has been partitioned into two rectangular smaller blocks, where a street runs through.
現在、この区画はその間を道路が通ることで、二つの長方形の区画に分けられています。
The original block had common places called ’Seri’ and ‘Kaisho’.
元々の区画には「せり」と「会所」と呼ばれる共有の場所がありました。
They were remaining lands after people built their houses in the block.
それらは人々が区画内に家を建てた後に残った場所でした。

Kaisho was the area in the center, where garbages were kept for the collection.
会所は真ん中の場所で、そこにゴミを置いていました。
The common toilets were also located here.
共同トイレもここに置かれました。
Seri was the space on both sides of Kaisho, and was used to grow vegetables.
せりは会所の両側にあったスペースで、野菜を育てるのに使われました。
Fire was the most serious concern in cities and towns throughout the Edo period.
江戸時代、都市や町において最も深刻な問題でした。
Because there was no good firefighting system like today,
the best approach to extinguish a fire was to break down homes around the fire.
今日のような優れた消火システムはなかったので、火を消す最善の方法は火の回りにある家を壊すことでした。
So, Seri played an important role in preventing the fire from spreading.
ですからせりは火災の延焼を防ぐのに重要な役割を果たしていました。
Locals were in charge of maintaining their community areas, for example, sand used to repair roads was sometimes stored in the Seri.
地元の人々は地域の維持管理を担当しており、例えば、道路を修復するための砂が時々せりに保管してありました。
