【レビュー】　歌詞を味わう洋楽　第２講　'You Belong With Me' (Taylor Swift, 2008)

今回は、Taylor Swift の 'You Belong With Me' (2008) の歌詞を味わいたいと思います。

You're on the phone with your girlfriend
She's upset, she's going off about something that you said
'Cause she doesn't get your humor like I do

I'm in the room, it's a typical Tuesday night
I'm listening to the kind of music she doesn't like
And she'll never know your story like I do

まず、登場人物を整理しましょう。
'You' は主人公が想いを寄せる男の子、'She' はその子の彼女、つまり、主人公にとっての恋敵、という構図になります。

「あの子は私みたいにあなたのユーモアがわからない」
「私は部屋であの子好みでない曲を聴いてる」
「あの子は私みたいにあなたの話をわからない」

序盤から、ライバル心むき出しです。
主人公は、男の子のことを昔から知ってる幼馴染み、といった関係性でしょうか。
MVを見ると、家も隣同士のようです。

But she wears short skirts
I wear t-shirts
She's cheer captain
And I'm on the bleachers
Dreaming about the day when you wake up and find
That what you're looking for has been here the whole time
 
If you could see
That I'm the one
Who understands you
Been here all along
So, why can't you see
You belong with me

サビ前からサビにかけての歌詞です。
「あの子と私の対比」が面白いです。
あの子の服装は 'short skirt' なのに対して、私は 't-shirt'。
あの子がチア部のキャプテン（'cheer captain'）をしているのに対して、私は「 観客席（'bleachers'）にいる」とあります（MVを見ると、男の子はアメフトをしているようです）。
「派手な恋敵」と「素朴な主人公」の対照的な二人のイメージが膨らみます。

そしてサビに向かって「あなたのことを理解してあげられるのは私だと気づいてほしい」ともどかしく思う主人公の気持ちが綴られます。

Walk in the streets with you in your worn out jeans
I can't help thinking this is how it ought to be
Laughing on a park bench thinking to myself
Hey, isn't this easy

I haven't seen it in a while

2番に入ります。
主人公と男の子がお出かけをしているようです。
古着のジーンズ（'worn out jeans'）を履いて、公園のベンチで笑い合って（'laughing on a park bench')、男の子は主人公といると、素でいられる様子がうかがえます。

そんな彼の「町全体を明るくしてしまうような笑顔」（'a smile that could light up this whole town'）を、あの子と付き合い出してから見なくなった、と主人公は言います。
きっと男の子は、ハイスペックな彼女に気を遣いながら付き合っているのでしょう。
そんな状況に主人公はいたたまれないのでしょう。

２番のサビ前からサビにかけての歌詞です。
内容は、大体１番と同じです。
あの子が 'high heels' を履くのに対して、私は 'sneakers'。
ここにも「あの子との対比」が出てきます。

I'm the one who makes you laugh
When you know you're about to cry
I know your favorite songs
And you tell me about your dreams

Think I know it's with me

Cメロの部分です。

「あなたが辛い時、笑顔にしてあげられるのは私だ」
「あなたの好きな歌や夢も知っている」
「あなたの居場所に気づいてほしい」

主人公の切実な思いが溢れます。

クライマックスを迎えます。
個人的には、 'You Belong To Me' ではなく、'You Belong With Me' であるところが肝だと思っています。
前者の 'To' は何となく「事務的に所属している」感じがするのに対して、後者の 'With' は「一緒にいる」感じがするからです。

ちなみにこの記事でも触れたMVでは、Taylor が一人二役を演じています。
MVを観てから歌詞を読むと、より理解がしやすいでしょうし、逆に先に歌詞を読んで自分なりのイメージを膨らませてからMVを観て、照らし合わせるのも面白いでしょう。

「人が人を想う気持ち」は、かけがえのないもの。
今まさに同じ状況にある人は自分と重ねながら、通り過ぎた人はあの頃を懐かしみながら、歌詞を味わってみてください。
