Amazon CEO ジェフ・ベゾスが毎年発行している「株主への手紙」。自分で読んでみて、「ビジネスパーソンにも役立ちそう」と思った部分を抜粋してご紹介していきます。

今回は、「決断」について。

決断には、一度したら後戻りできないものがあります。開けたら戻ってくることができない「片開きのドア」のようなものです。こういう時は、方法論に従い、注意深く、時間をかけて考え抜き、あらゆる人に相談した上で、決断しなければなりません。ドアを開けた向こう側が気に入らなくても、元いた場所に戻ることはできないのですから。

しかし、ほとんどの決断は、変更できるし、逆戻りすることもできる。つまり「両開きのドア」なのです。こういう決断でイマイチの選択肢を選んでしまったとしても、その結果を耐え忍ぶ必要はありません。ドアをもう一度開けて戻れば良いのです。このタイプの決断は、素早く行えるし、行うべきです。（2015年の「株主への手紙」より）

【原文】Some decisions are consequential and irreversible or nearly irreversible – one-way doors – and these decisions must be made methodically, carefully, slowly, with great deliberation and consultation. If you walk through and don’t like what you see on the other side, you can’t get back to where you were before. We can call these Type 1 decisions. But most decisions aren’t like that – they are changeable, reversible – they’re two-way doors. If you’ve made a suboptimal Type 2 decision, you don’t have to live with the consequences for that long. You can reopen the door and go back through. Type 2 decisions can and should be made quickly by high judgment individuals or small groups.

私は臆病なので「決断」を迫られると身構えてしまうのですが、こういう風に言ってもらえると安心します（笑）

さらにベゾスは、いわゆる「大企業病」について、決断スピードという観点から以下のように述べています。

組織が大きくなると、「両開き」タイプの決断まで「片開き」タイプとみなし、時間をかけて慎重に取り組む傾向が出てくるようです。その末路は、スピードの欠如、無分別なリスク回避、十分な試行錯誤の欠如、そしてイノベーションの退廃です。こういう傾向は何とかして叩き出さなければなりません。（2015年の「株主への手紙」より）

【原文】As organizations get larger, there seems to be a tendency to use the heavy-weight Type 1 decision-making process on most decisions, including many Type 2 decisions. The end result of this is slowness, unthoughtful risk aversion, failure to experiment sufficiently, and consequently diminished invention. We’ll have to figure out how to fight that tendency.

日本の大企業は「時間をかけて慎重に決断する＝正しい」という思考回路にハマり、「ハンコリレー」がルーチン化しています。

しかしベゾスは、ほとんどの意思決定は後でも巻き返しが効くので、パッパとこなして早く前進することを勧めています。

こう考えると、不思議と「決断」もそれほど怖いものではないように思えてきます！
