こちらの英語学習日記シリーズでは、Blinkistで新しく知った英語表現や英単語を中心に、個人的に面白かった、勉強になったポイントを紹介していきます。今日はその第14回です！なんだかんだ2週間継続できています。

今日は2度目の投稿です。最近、1日遅れての投稿になっていたので、ようやくタイトルの日付通りの日に投稿するペースに戻すことができました。

今日のタイトルは「侘び寂び」。英語学習日記第11回に読んだ「生き甲斐」がテーマのBlinkに引き続き、日本固有の概念やマインドセットを西洋文化の目線から学ぶ文章です。日本人でありながら、僕自身知らなかった概念や文化などもあり、読んでいて楽しい内容でした。
このような日本固有の概念を英語で即興で説明するのってめちゃくちゃ難しいので、英語によって自国文化を再インストールしておくことは、いつか他文化出身者に「日本の〇〇について教えてよ」って聞かれたときに役立ちそうです。

今日のBlinkから得た学び

今日のBlinkの内容で、個人的にためになったものを引用します。

We also see this heightened attention in the way the Japanese seasons are measured. Rather than having for seasons, the Japanese classical calendar includes 24 smaller seasons known as sekki, and 72 micro-seasons, known as ko. These micro-seasons pay special attention to minute changes in the world's atmosphere and appearance. They have names like Awakening of hibernated insects and Mist starts to hover.

二十四節気。立春、夏至、秋分など、いくつかは聞いたことありますが、それが二十四節気という24に分けられた季節のうちの一部だとは知りませんでした！本文中のAwakening of hibernated insects = 啓蟄(けいちつ)のようですね。

七十二候。1年を72の季節に分けることができるほどの、時の移ろいに対する解像度の高さは圧巻です。1候あたり5日ですよ？1週間よりも短い単位で、季節の変化を感じられる時間感覚、みなさんは持っていますか？
本文中のMist starts to hover = 霞始靆 (かすみはじめてたなびく)のようですね。

When life does throw us a challenge, the best thing we can do is learn the power of acceptance.

ここでのacceptanceは[willingness to accept an unpleasant or difficult situation]という意味。

We must be ready to accept change. As everything is impermanent, even stability, we must always be ready to adapt.

「変化を受け入れる」ことって「禅」的な発想でもあるんだなと思いました。日本的(アジア的？)思想としての「禅」は、これから勉強してみたいジャンルの一つです。

The truth is that learning is never complete, and we should approach it with that in mind.

学びに終わりはない。でも俺は進むんだ。

In fact, wabi sabi, which values the passage of time, teaches us the path is more important than the destination.

「剣道」「茶道」「合気道」などの日本の文化に「道」がつくこと、つまり剣や茶の「技」を習得すること以上に、何かを追求し続ける「過程」で得られる経験や教訓に比重を置く考え方はとても日本的なようです。「道」の終わりには一生辿り着けないという前提(acceptance of our imperfection)が非西洋的だからでしょうね。

When we understand that our time on Earth is limited, it helps us find value and meaning in it. We're also better able to treasure moments with our loved ones, or doing the things we enjoy most of all.

「侘び寂び」的発想は、imperfectionに加えて、impermanenceも肯定します。nothing lasts foreverということですね。枯れてゆく花など、変わりゆくものに美しさを見出す。現代的に言えば「終わりがあるからこそ美しい」といった感じでしょうか。この発想はかなり好きです。
老いることや死ぬことから目を逸らさずに受け入れる。有限性を意識すると、何をやるべきかはっきりしてきますね。

新しく学んだ表現とその使い方

なかなか覚えられそうになかったので、パラグラフごと一気に載せます。

lavish[large in amount, or impressive, and usually costing a lot of money]
courtly[extremely polite and full of respect, especially in an old-fashioned way]
ornate[covered with a lot of decoration, especially when this involves very small or complicated designs]
luxury[the enjoyment of special and expensive things, particularly food and drink, clothes and surroundings]
pastime[something that you enjoy doing when you are not working]
opulence[the quality of being expensive and luxurious]
austere[simple and plain; without any decorations]
signify[to be a sign of sth]
simplicity[the quality of being natural and plain]
humility[the quality of not thinking that you are better than other people; the quality of being humble]
frugality[the quality of being careful when using money or food]

Soon, though, drinking tea became part of the lavish courtly life of the ruling classes, with ornate tearooms and utensils. Rather than a tranquil ceremony reflecting its Zen origins, it became another luxury pastime.

Then, a tea master for the famous daimyo Toyotomi Hideyoshi named Sen no Rikyu decided to revolutionize the tea ceremony. He rejected the opulence of the courtly tea ceremonies, favoring a more austere version, with simple utensils and smaller tearooms. Rather than signify wealth, it should celebrate simplicity and natural beauty. Rikyu's style of tea ceremony became known as wabi tea, or "wabi-cha". Wabi, then, implies a mindset that appreciates simplicity, humility and frugality.

pastimeって、timeがつくし「余暇」などの時間的概念を意味する単語だろうと思っていましたが、「趣味」でした。

今日調べた単語

今日英英辞典で調べた単語・表現は次の87個です！春休みで時間もあるので、前から知っている単語も意識的に調べて、例文を音読したり、自分が知っている意味以外での用例を確認したりしています。

蛍光ペンで線が引かれている単語・表現は、以前にも英英辞典で調べたことがあるもの、つまり今日のBlinkをきっかけに再会・復習することができた表現です。

それにしても今日は面白かった！「侘び寂び」についても、「禅」についても、また学びたいと思います！心が軽くなるヒントに満ちている気がする。
