スミレの山 高尾山⑬ アカネスミレ Takao, the mountain of violets: No.13 Akane-sumire

高尾山は、知る人ぞ知るスミレの山。
日本では、約５０種のスミレの野生種(*1)が確認されていますが、高尾にはそのうち１８種が自生している(*2)と言われています。高尾山ならびにその周辺では、毎年３月上旬から５月下旬にかけて、あちこちで可憐なスミレの花々を観察することができます。
Mt. Takao is known as habitats for a wide variety of wild violet flowers (in Japanese, sumire, or “Sue-Mee-Ray”). In Japan, about 50 species of wild violets (*1) have been confirmed, and 18 of them are said to grow naturally in the Mt. Takao area(*2). Every year from the beginning of March to the end of May, you can find pretty violet flowers all over the place in Mt. Takao and its surroundings.

高尾でスミレの季節が終盤を迎える頃、里山や山中では、鮮やかな、まさにスミレ色のスミレが咲き始めます。アカネスミレ（Viola phalacrocarpa）です。
As the blooming season for violets in Takao approaches to the end, violets in the literally violet-color start to bloom in both satoyama as well as in the mountains. They are Akane-sumire (Viola phalacrocarpa).
アカネスミレとよく似たスミレで、オカスミレというスミレがあります。オカスミレはアカネスミレの変種（ver. glaberrima）で、アカネスミレは花の側弁だけでなく花柄や萼片も有毛なのに対して、オカスミレは花の側弁以外は無毛という特徴があります。それ以外は両者とても似ているので、見慣れていないと判別は難しいかもしれません。
There are violets that are very similar-looking to Akane-sumire, which are called Oka-sumire. Oka-sumire are a variant of Akane-sumire (ver. glaberrima); while Akane-sumire’s lateral petals, stalks and sepals are hairy, Oka-sumire are hairless except for the lateral petals. Other than that, they are very similar-looking. It would be difficult to distinguish them unless you are very familiar with them.
高尾では無毛のオカスミレのほうがよく見つかりますが、アカネスミレも、明るく陽の当たる草むらでよく見かけます。両者とも、高尾においてはスミレの季節終盤の主役です。
You can find the hairless Oka-sumire more than Akane-sumire, but Akane-sumire are also common. They are typically found on bright, sunny land with grass growing. Both are the main actors of Sumire's late season in Takao.
