いわゆる the Internet におけるプロトコル実装の原則として、Postel's Law というものがある。初出はRFC760にあるフレーズで、以下のようなものだ↓

In general, an implementation should be conservative in its sending behavior, and liberal in its receiving behavior.

この言葉はとても有名で、"Be conservative in what you do, be liberal in what you accept from others" などと言われたり、もっと簡単に "Be conservative in what you send, be liberal in what you accept" などといわれたりする。

私はこの言葉がとても好きで、ふと思い出した。人間における人とのコミュニケーションも、これにつきると言っていいかもしれない。
