Be conservative in what you send, be liberal in what you accept
In general, an implementation should be conservative in its sending behavior, and liberal in its receiving behavior.
Wikipedia
Be conservative in what you do, be liberal in what you accept from others" などと言われたり、もっと簡単に "Be conservative in what you send, be liberal in what you accept" などといわれたりする。
