2 mistranslations of 'Hear the wind sing' by Haruki Murakami.

i found 2 mistranslated words in , Haruki Murakami's novel 'Hear the sind sing' which is translated by Ted Goossen.

Pasteur and Pascal

chapter 22 (p.56) 

the girl who has 4 fingers talks about Pascal(パスカル)'s mind. but in the original Japanese edition, she said Pasteur(パスツール).

Pascal(Blaise Pascal) is a French mathematician. He didn't find antibodies for rabies and low-temperature sterilization. The man who did is Pasteur(Louis Pasteur).

so the girl pointed out the misunderstanding of protagonist, but she also misunderstands it in Ted Goossen version.

Who is monkey?

Chapter 38(p.96)

J says "You and the Rat made quite a team".

in the original Japanese version, J says '猿のコンビも解消だね(the pair of monkey will dissolve)'. who is monkey? the hint is in chapter 3.

in chapter 3, J says "the monkey on the left is you"　"And the one on the right is me". this is the remark about 'the nicotine-stained print'. so monkeys are metaphor of J and protagonist.

therefore, J truly said "You and me made quite a team". the Rat is not monkey. I don't know why the translator interpreted that the pair of monkey means protagonist and the Rat.

Another version 

By the way, Alfred Birnbaum version of same novel, those parts are translated exactly. "They said Pasteur  had..." (Chapter 22). "the break-up of the monkey duo."

but this version is hardly able to get because it published only about 15 times and not distributed  to overseas.
